NBD - Yamaha TRB6P

Currently on route back from London with my new prize... a very nice Yamaha TRB6P in turquoise blue. It is in desperate need of a thorough set up, clean and new strings and has a nasty but very stable crack between the pots, but it was nothing short of a steal.

Looking forward to spending the afternoon giving it some well needed TLC.

This is how it looks now... not terrible, will hopefully look better later today!

Terrific basses, these Yamaha TRB-6P first generation. I had a few, some were defretted, and as a fretless it's a killer bass.

I do tend to prefer the 2 trussrods models, which are the rarest ones ... of course.

Well done, Russ.

Top quality basses these, I've owned one since the late 80s, but they did cost a small fortune, about  £1800 in '88 if I remember correctly, not an insignificant amount of money at the time. Great feel and sound especially with the piezo pickups. I love the blue ones. Enjoy!

The serial number on this one is 1N22064 which I think means it was the 64th guitar/bass built on July 22nd of either 86, 87, 88 or 89...

I assume 1989 as I don't think the TRB6P's were made before 89. Can anyone confirm this?

This is a 1992 Yamaha TRB-6P, Russ, as it's more IN22064. Their pdf explaining the serialisation is not always accurate, especially for these old TRB's as they have sometimes hard to decipher serial numbers and strange ones too...

The serial number is definitely 1N22064 and it can't be a 1992 as it was bought by the original owner in 1991! Having reviewed as many guides to Yamaha serial numbers as I can find, this particular serial number layout is apparently for 1986/1989 basses and as the TRB6P was introduced in 1989 (so say the Yamaha archives!) I am close to certain it is 1989.
