There is an audio and video app where you can control the Mic gain, stereo separation, add compression etc. It has onboard DACs so it isn’t relying on anything on the phone. Thanks to @SubsonicSimpleton for the heads-up about the adapter thread - I do have a camera tripod, so that takes care of mounting it.
