Not meant to be political but where do we stand?

I so hate the idea that there are voters in UK who wish to strip themselves and their fellow countrymen of rights and freedoms we have enjoyed for decades. Who in their right mind would want to curtail their own personal freedom? onanists

If they haven’t about read it in whatever ghastly tabloid they read, then they probably don’t realise that ending FoM applies to them too. They just assume it applies to Johnny Foreigner.

No as said above, that is something not possible till we know what is happening.  My band are taking bookings now for next year across Europe, work visa's are a cost we are not accounting for at the moment.

No, I don’t know that I’ll need one yet.

Exactly - which leaves us in a situation, doesn't it?

Will you cancel if it transpires that you'll need visas? - or will you try to work illegally?

As one of our party has global commitments with another act as his 'day job' , we will never pursue the illegal working thing.

We've met many European bands who have worked illegally in USA but when we went we did everything legally, at great expense too.

The idea that we'd have to get visa'd up for every EU gig means we'll probably never gig again.

Exactly - and their friends living off pensions in the Costas are not immigrants, they're ex-pats. Totally different, see.

On the one hand I can see EU countries, supported by trade bodies, being keen to sort out a temporary work visa-system that's relatively hassle free and applies to multiple EU/EFTA nations - remember they will have people wanting to come to the UK too - but you can count on our gov't to balls it up by insisting on some sort of nonsense that means it will be unworkable for Brits going to the EU.

I posted about a similar thing a few months ago. If we leave on Halloween, then you’ll need to pay VAT upfront on any merchandise that you take with you.

I’m just taking a MacBook and midi controller, maybe a couple of pedals. So no, I’ll hopefully get away with going as a tourist.

I read a thing posted by the MU a while ago that the UK would be enforcing a minimum salary cap before granting work permits, £30k or pro-rata.

So how would that work in the gig economy?

It's fiendish isn't it? All these 'rules' and 'red tape' and it ought to be far simpler to let us in because you need us more than we need you. No wait - you're ok, and you too, but not these ones I don't like.

Exactly. It's a nightmare. I feel particularly sorry for SMEs that do a significant amount of trade within the EU - they must be losing their sanity trying to work out what will be required soon, compared to the current simple system of pre-authorisation and compliance.

They don’t want people coming here doing that do they? They want the brightest and the best, though if I was part of that, this is one of the last countries I’d visit.

I own one of them too - I have exclusive UK distribution rights to the largest inventory of a certain type of capital equipment in EU (based in Germany)to rent business to business into the UK market. Everything is imported temporarily and I have 2 or 3 artic trailers a week going back and forth.

Nightmare

Oof. My sympathies? best wishes? year's free supply of ant-stress pills? /notbeingsarcastic

I know that some larger firms can afford trade specialists (such as they are, who's an expert in the unknown?!) but you're basically on your own, because the gov't don't know, and neither do your supplier. It's crackers.

Are you just going on as normal and pretending nothing's happening until it does? (to avoid meltdown)

Above: that £30k limit obvs is only expected to work one-way and there will be howls of outrage when it turns out that no you can't work part-time in a salon in Torremolinos to keep you busy in your semi-retirement.

Got my EORI number sorted - trying to sort out a VAT and duty deferment account BUT due to the amount of traffic and high value of the equipment we bring in HMRC require a £2.5 million bank guarantee!!!   When our balance sheet is c£500k getting a £2.5m bank guarantee is impossible.

The issue being that VAT will be levied on the VALUE of the goods we bring in, not the cost of renting them.

We have looked at 'rehoming' a quantity of equipment here, we have a large warehouse, but UK market is so fickle it is likely we will stock the wrong gear, besides the UK market alone isn't big enough to maintain adequate utilisation to pay for the gear.

If UK leaves the SM I can see us going bust within a month.

When I wrote to my MP (tory) to explain the difficulties his only response was to ask how many employees I had.

When I told him I had seven, which is all I have, he just responded in a 'stinky poo happens' kind of manner.

Ah - the 'you're not a big concern' - forgetting that that makes a) 8 voters (excluding family members of voting age) and b) if every MP has 20 business with 7 employees and 1 boss that goes under, that's 100k they'll need to magick off the unemployment figures... , plus loss of rates to the local council, etc. etc.

They really are so shortsighted.

it’ll simply be uneconomic to do so.

What with the cost (and hassle) of carnets, on top of visas, he's right.

Almost all our gigs are in EU - that's our market.

I can see us never gigging again.

And with my business likely to go bust, that effectively destroys my life.

UK leaving SM equals my life being destroyed.

Thanks leave voters. You nasty pasties.
