John Entwistle and the mystery mic

It's a noise cancellation technique from the good old days of analogue.  The mics are out of phase so the background is cancelled out while the vocals (in the upper mic) survive the summing of the two signals.

If I recall correctly from my sound and lighting coursework back in the day that is.
