Shame that guitar looks like a Barbie accessory

It's not one of their finest visual designs but the above was one of only a few pix of Chris Martin since he shaved off his moustache, an initiative for which we should all be profoundly grateful.

That and picnic tables on the back of the front seats. Tell your friend he's awesome. 😎

That takes me back - I had a 1978 poo brown one of those in the early '90's, when I was broke but needed a cheap 4 seater.

Plus was that with the leather and walnut it really did feel like driving a tiny Jag / Roller - minus points were too numerous to list, not least the hydrolastic suspension regularly leaking out so you'd come back to your parked car to find it listing to one side, looking at you like a sad but ugly dog.

The rusting body held together with filler and glassfibre patches would have probably gone on forever, but one day the driveshaft fell off.

I now have a 1982 Triumph TR7 convertible (harvest gold with beige tartan interior....) - will I never learn? o.O

Back to the OP - I know nothing at all about Mr Hall, but have owned 4 Rics (only one now, but a keeper - a '72/73 FG 4001).   I'd say Harley-Davidson are a better comparison - they stuck with basically the same agricultural, unergonomic, fairly primitive but iconic design for their entire history - but it does what it does so well, and somehow just outcools the rest. B|

Harley Davidson is a very good comparison - thank you! And talking of cool, I am now seriously lusting after a Walnut 4003s. In fact, I might go have and have a little browse through the Marketplace to see......oh, hang on......

d’oh.

That's what Harley riders tell themselves anyway. Repeatedly, I'd imagine.

Riders of other motorcycles may take a different view. ;)

Mmm... for my next family saloon I'm thinking of buying a Massey Fergusson tractor... :D

A nice little restored TE20 ("Grey Fergie") would only set you back £2,000-3000. Hook a trailer on the back for the fambly...

As a kid I'd go holidaying to my relations up in the Western Isles and these poor things were used to haul peats home from the moors. The drivers used to bounce around on that seat. Must have done wonders for one's spine!

Classic thread!

No, Harley is not a good comparison. Despite the basic configuration of the engine not changing (erm apart from the V Rod and the Street Rod), Harley have done loads of stuff, but they do it in a way that to the casual observer you’d not notice.

if Harley were running Rickenbacket they’d have solved the bridge, but it would be able to palm mute, look the same and sound exactly the same. With no additional issues like the Hipshot.

they'd also be making a Far East version and making more money on Tee shirt sales than anything else

As far as car parallels go, I would suggest the Rickenbacker bass is like a Lotus, in that they hit on a winning formula and have kept that DNA in the product throughout their history and have not bowed to pressure to conform with other brands.

They're difficult to get into for some and the ride can be a bit hard, but by heck in their element they are fun!

You’ve even got to take the cover off to enjoy it at its best.

JH once went into flap about non-RIC Rick bomber jackets. Real tacky '80s jobs. Can't say I blamed him for that!

Actuall the more I cogitate on the Harley/Rickenbacker parallels, the more persuaded I am. In fact I think they should emulate HD and give all their basses names that sound like gay porn stars - V Rod Muscle, Fat Boy, Softail Slim, Bad Boy, Street Rod, Street Bob - and his good buddy Fat Bob...

I concur with your Rick-porno plan. And let's not forget that Wee John looks not unlike Ron Jeremy!

To Debbie McGee:

"And what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?"

Mrs Merton 1995

They were 20 years apart.

Yes, it does sound like a lot, but when you look around it's not THAT crazy. It happens. Without riches.

My own girlfriend is 16 years younger. I dated one that was 24 years younger too. Trust me, I'm not a model or a millionaire... but because of my work I seem to be surrounded with people a lot younger than me and I haven't become a grumpy old man, so while my white beard may give my age away I can chat and mix with anyone. THAT does it. :)

I agree with you. My honey is 13 years younger than me. As somebody wise once said "you gotta make 'em laugh".

It's awful that we have to justify ourselves to @Teebs though. He is such a hate criminal about these things. 😔

True. And in my case, be pathetically grateful for any and all favours bestowed.

The age difference between Mrs S and I is a little larger than any of those quoted so far and, again, I'm neither a millionaire nor am i the world's most attractive man. And bits of me are laughably small.

But while she needs help getting up the stairs, I'm here for her....

Indeed. Regardless of age. It's the only way men with my... physical characteristics, ahem, have a chance :D

Actually, the 4001/4003 evolved over the years; RIC did introduce other models, but folks just bought the classics anyway.

This. The people who complain about the bridge, binding etc still didn’t buy the 4004, which addressed all these “issues”.

FWIW John Hall has said numerous times that there are things about the 4003 he’d change, but he that he wasn’t prepared to deal with the backlash from diehard fans.

Also, anyone looking for a different bridge, single rod and lack of binding may wish to look at the Rick Al Cisneros. Not really my cup of tea mind, but I do wonder if it’s a sign of things to come.

I've got a 4004 too...
