Insurance options for instruments

Just got hold of a new instrument. By coincidence my house insurance was due for renewal. They want an extra £100 a year to insure this one  instrument....and that is only at home/damage etc ...it is not covered out of the flat. It is quite valuable but I didn’t pay anything like the valued number. Is there any other way of insuring instruments? Musicians union only cover up to 2k I believe? Has anyone tried specialist companies...particularly claiming from them?

Allianz are good. They cover accidental damage, theft etc etc including theft from unaccompanied vehicles as long as the instrument could not be seen.

I've not claimed on a music policy with them but I use them for work stuff and they've written a few £100,000 cheques.

Is that specialist musical instrument cover?

I’d suggest you shop around a bit.

Our current policy covers all my instruments (9 in all - some of them pretty valuable) for not much more than that.

I’m not going to do the work for you, but there’s plenty of comparison sites available.

Many house policies don't do new for old on instruments and don't offer any protection if you are gigging - or at least getting paid to gig.

And the little stuff like pedal boards / power supplies add up quick - and it nearly gave me a heart-attack when I added up just the pedals on my 3 boards!

Unattended vehicles too. Can’t see the point otherwise.

I just looked up Allianz and it gave an option for unattended vehicles. It think it also states that if you can see the items then they are not covered...ie has to be a van...will call a couple of companies in the morning. Quote from web site not working.

Doesn’t have to be a van.

Car with a boot is enough. Even an estate with a tonneau cover.

That seems odd! Unless the instrument is especially valuable?

I'm with Direct Line and pay probably more than I should for their Home Plus cover; but it includes insurance of all individual home contents up to £4K to a total of something like £40K. I've checked with them and it does cover instruments (and jewellery, antiques, works of art, etc), but not for commercial use.

I'm back with New Moon again after a break. A European Tour earlier this year made me realise that I probably should have some cover. I've always found them really cool to deal with and I like the vibe of the company (they are all musicians who have the near impossible task of trying to make insurance a bit edgy!?).... but I HAVE NEVER CLAIMED! I guess that is where the true test in all these things is.

New Moon have always been really good at understanding whatever I throw at them (not literally), and really friendly to deal with. Cover for a mix of instruments/amps/pedals/other bits with individually assigned usage (ie home, UK, abroad), and in-car cover, worth well into 5 figures comes in at less than £150.

As always an insurance company only measures up when you make a claim, which thankfully I've not had to do yet.

Turns out that it is. My insurance will only cover individual items up to 3k.
