I noticed a 4004 Laredo in midnight blue just went through fleabay for under £1000. (£7. less than £1000.)...

That was a massive bargain.

I've owned a Laredo and Cheyenne 4004 - they're nice enough, but I never gelled with them as they just didn't feel Ricky enough for me. Just look too 'modern' for my tastes - and they came out in the 90's! 🙄

That second one with the black PG is lovely

Thanks - that's my current project; it's probably going to get the SD & black surround off the '72 fireglo (which I'm reverting to stock).

The pickguard was a bit crooked in the picture, as it is a 2-part one and was only held on with two screws and a bit of tape, just to see what it looked like vs. a white one and a brass one (from @Beedster).

With the pair of humbuckers I'll be putting on a Freeway 6-position switch.

I do have an issue to resolve first, though, as the bridge won't go low enough just now.

You cruel b.......

*Sobs*

Yeah, remember you already have a 4003, so you just *want* a Standard as well...

it's not like you worked down the pit from the age of 13 to buy the Hondo II that you polish every Sunday morning...

and that you'll never afford another bass, because once you've put clothes on the kid's backs and food in their bellies, you've barely enough left for a pint of mild yourself, and a small guiness for the mrs...

Mr "first world problems"... 😉 😁

My issue is similarish - the bridge goes low enough, but the G string is almost touching the factory PUP surround... what I need is a PUP surround made of pickguard or similar material, and without the bellmouth shape of the factory item.

No. No, i "need" a 4003s. It's for a, er, a....a project. Yes, that's right. A recording project that needs a 4003s.

And i may not have worked down the pit but them compooters don't screw theirselves up, y'know. I've spent the best years of my life sweating, toiling and middle-managing till my fingers are red raw.

Plus, now I've retired we have to watch the pennies. It's either a 4003s or clothes on the wife's back....

So, obvs, it's a 4003s

I've decided mine is going to have the black SD one, possibly today...

My name is Skinnyman.

I am an addict.

(Sobs quietly)

I keep buying bass guitars.

In fact, guitars of all sorts.

This is only half the collection.

And...I can't even play

(Breaks down uncontrollably)

Which is your favourite?

It changes periodically. I had a year or so just gigging the Sandberg. I then had a spell of gigging the Precision - sounds fantastic but it weighs more than a JCB. I've got flats on the Jazz and it sounds awesome - I've been gigging that most recently.

So i use them in rotation.

But the one I'll be buried with is the Ric.

Having very carefully considered your illness, I prescribe abstinence.

In order for you to achieve a complete recovery from this terrible affliction, you need to abstain from owning, buying or playing basses & guitars until you have beaten it.

To this end, I'm sending round a specialist courier to your house this morning to collect all of your basses & guitars.

The guitars & Rickenbackers will be humanely destroyed, and the remaining basses will be returned to you once I deem you to have made a complete recovery.

I'm only doing this for your own good, and I'm sure that one day, you'll thank me. :D

You've made the first, tiny step (acceptance that there is a problem), now you need to be a big Skinnyman, & let us* help you.

It's a long and difficult road ahead, but I have every confidence that you'll be successful, if you just let us* help you. :)
