NIPSD - Vitoos Iso8

New isolated power supply day.

I've been messing around with a pedalboard which doesn't actually contain many pedals - Zoom B3n, Line 6 G50 wireless, Korg Volta bass synth going into the Aux on the B3n, and off-board a Roland PK5A to make the Korg Volta make sounds a bit like a Moog Taurus. However, I didn't want to have multiple power supplies, so I tried daisy-chaining them (with a polarity-reversing and size-changing lead I made up for the Volta). First power supply was too weak and weedy, got another one which had enough oomph but there was a huge amount of noise - even with just the wireless and B3n plugged in.

So I did some research on isolated power supplies, and a post in this very forum sent me towards http://stinkfoot.se/power-supplies. I wanted something cheap, small, and isolated, and preferably with a 12V output in case I want to use my little mixer rather than the B3n Aux for the Volta. Very near the end of the page, I found the Vitoos power supplies - the DC8 is partially isolated, the Iso8 says it's fully isolated, and Stinkfoot says it is (but not verified). Under £45 off That Ebay, rather than £100+. So I bought one.

It arrived today and I first took a multimeter to it. Infinite resistance between all of the pins, and also between all of the sleeves. Then I plugged it in and connected everything up, and all was quiet on the Western Front. So, for any B3n users wanting to do something similar, or indeed anyone needing to use an isolated power supply, I can say that the Vitoos Iso8 is well worth a try.

Looks interesting. What PSU did you get to power it?

They supply a 12V 2A PSU in the box, so it's ready to go. I looked at the ISO4 but it's four a side and physical constraints meant the single-sided ISO8 was the more practical option.

I did have to chop a bit out under my pedal board to fit the ISO4 underneath it and have access to all the uotlets. Works a treat though.

Mine has worked well. I've modified a daisy-chain lead so I can use two or three power outputs to power an HX Stomp, just need to actually try it out. However, you can't get them now. There's a selection of allegedly isolated budget PSUs available with assorted different mixes of power output, mostly taking the form of half a dozen or so low current outputs (100mA or 300mA), one or two high current 9V outputs, a dedicated 12V and a dedicated 18V output.

I have just discovered they aren't available now.

Looking at some of those low current ones, but I'm not convinced and I worry the old adage "buy cheap buy twice" will very much apply to these forty quid jobbies, so I should maybe just go straight for a one spot cs6 etc etc

If I was in the market at the moment, I would have a look at https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Caline-P1-Isolated-Guitar-Effects-Power-Supply-Direct-From-Caline-in-China/164191630829 and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mosky-ISO-Guitar-Effect-Pedal-Processsor-Power-Supply-Adapter-10-Isolated-Output/313203059775 and see if there's any more info available on the interwebs. In fact, regarding the latter one, see https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/mosky-iso-10-power-supply-any.2162617/ and you will see examples of fact (which say it's a Good Thing) and of speculation (which cast doubt on it being a Good Thing without any facts whatsoever).

Wow Brilliant, thank you so much for the heads up on these!!!

I'll investigate now.

I'm a bit new to all this so I really appreciate those pointers!

Cheers

Thomas
