OC2 sounds pretty close. Maybe not quite as resonant but a decent facsimile. Definitely on my list once it's actually available in shops.

What do you mean by “resonant”? There is still some scope for tone shaping with bass and treble EQ and the filter.

Bear in mind, the two OC-2 patches I posted are generated differently:

”OC-2 is the new black” uses the monophonic pitch shift voice, which sounds pretty close off the bat but has it’s own dedicated low pass filter to cut off the high end. I’ve actually got it below 50% in this clip.

“OC-2 1d...” is actually made using the square wave oscillator through the normal 4-pole lowpass filter and is a bit fuller sounding and less honking than a real OC-2.

Must admit that I am generally leeching somewhat with this preset community as a lot of this is entirely beyond me.  I miss the simplicity of the Deep Impact still 😂 I am finding making a patch from scratch quite difficult.

I have seen two but I thought I read somewhere that someone was working on doing a preset mimicking the Deep Impacts 9 voices?

Also, I am looking for a good set of envelope filter sounds; I loved the presets on the Soundblox unit but again I’m struggling to dial in my own, finding it difficult to set sensitivity/depth etc.

It’s not leeching. The community is set up with sharing in mind. Some people love creating patches for others to use.

Yeah I realise, I guess I just feel guilty for downloading and not publishing many.  Only one (basically unusable but fun Anti-Guitarist Fire) uploaded by me so far...

The OC-2 ones sound great!

That was yours? I really liked that one and downloaded it to my pedal.

Great work Q.

My favourite so far is #19 Take your cue

Nothing so far, for me anyway, that touch your best FI patches I'm afraid! But maybe just early days?

Thanks. I am still getting to grips with this one though I feel pretty comfortable that I know what I’m doing now. I haven’t even touched the sequencer yet!

I do feel the FI still has much better tone sculpting options (better envelope implementation, pulse width modulation, EQ, ability to use more than two instances of the same waveform at once and the mind-blowing possibilities of the mod matrix) which allow me to get more of the sounds I’m after. Still, the C4 is capable of some amazing things and I’m starting to not miss my Manta.

So got mine yesterday, since all music stores were out of stock I ordered from Bassbudhda in Denmark. Decent price, good service BTW. I tend to favour small specialist shops where I can (like BassDirect, Bassmatters etc) so good to have an addition to the mix.

Anyway, what a genuinely excellent buy. I am amazed at the tracking and the simplicity of the Neuro app/tweaking as well as the small footprint. Can it replace an FI? No, but it is a very welcome addition to the synth pedal family and between the FI and C4 I cannot think of a synth sound I could not get.

Well done Source Audio....... !!

I’m really quite torn on whether to keep mine or not.... it’s a bit beyond me to use in the most part and I’m struggling to get out of it what I want, there’s just a little too much to alter.  I’m a sucker for a deep impact, the amount I was restricted to change on that was perfect for me 😅

@Kev in which case, recommend you give the Boss SY-1 a quick spin at some point. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Really loving mine and, as well as the quality of sounds, flawless tracking and fantastic arpeggiator, the ease of use is a massive boon.

@HazBeen

Thanks for that mini review.

Out of interest:

- how does the tracking compare to the FI, is it broadly similar or tighter?

- what is it that they both bring to the party that makes you feel you need both, rather than being able to manage with just one?

They track similarly well.

FI has a way way better implementation of the VCA envelope and having the sustain parameter in both the VCA and VCF envelopes means you can actually get notes that sustain for an age; remember my FI OC-2 patch? I got a good 30 seconds of solid sustain out of that. The C4 can’t do that as the envelopes all decay to zero (or really low values).

That’s kind of my feeling too. I love what it does and it has a lot of strengths but it’s never going to unseat my FI v3. It could get closer if SA see the light and add ADSR.

In my very short experience - as yet - with the C4 I think may actually track a fraction better than the FI with the current firmware. It is splitting hairs, but I was doing some AB-ing of sounds (as you do :)..) and I felt it was just a fraction better.

But I have not tried it with different basses, a million patches etc. so Herr Quatschmacher is probably the better judge.

Comparing the two is very difficult as they clearly are trying to achieve different things. The FI is intended as a full fat synth that is invinitely tweakable, the C4 I feel has been developed to be easy to use and excels in a smaller ‘bandwidth’ for lack of a better term. To me it is more like a Micro Korg, just totally excellent in many ways but not in as may ways as the FI is (which has ADSR, better sustain, more oscillators, separate LFOs for every oscillator which I do not think the C4 has.... not sure though, need to spend more time with it).

So fun, ease of use, size all very nice on the C4, FI the MacDaddy of bass synth pedals. But you do not always want or need the MacDaddy.

Hope that makes sense, and I want to reiterate that I am only just getting into the C4.

Looking at what Herr Quatschmacher ('HQ' from this point forward) is managing to do with the FI, it will also certainly out-do the SY-1 in terms of overall synth capability just as it does the C4; the SY-1 is for me, however, unrivalled in terms of its flawless tracking, ease of use and consequent fun; it's other usp is that it is completely poly. Being £75 less than the C4 and almost half the price of the FI (new) doesn't hurt either!

So with the FI, C4 and SY-1, we bass synth pedal users are suddenly finding ourselves spoilt for choice! :)
