Does a bass stand which really packs down into a gig bag but works exist?

I do like these though..also available in PVC IIRC

Image result for guitar stand

I've been tempted with one like that but would want to saw off the front part, presumably designed for an acoustic. I think Ibanez make one similar but it looks a bit 'sharp'

Again not ideal for asymmetrical shapes

I did buy one of these, was OK - you may be able to 'bend' the 'hands' of the stand to accommodate an odd shape perhaps

I use these;-

Have to offset the Maruszczyk’s a bit due the Jazz shaped body, but easily fit into my gigbags & they’re stable enough in use.

I use one of those too. It works, but on a small stage the flex of the plastic makes me worry someone will knock it over. I have a metal one that pokes out of my bag (actually that just broke).

What I’d really like is a compact double stand, but the ones an the market look poop.

I have an Ultimate stand at the moment, which is great, but it is all a bit "sticky out" of the main pocket on my gig bag. Any suggestions?

Don't put it in your gig bag.

When I use it, I carry mine separately. After a couple of very near misses, these days I just put the bass in the gig bag when it's not being played. Safer that way.

I foolishly bought one of these from another site advertising it as suitable for a guitar or bass. Maybe with a different brand name on it.

It really is only good for a Ukelele, so I couldn't recommend this for bass:

IME all these small stands are fine for guitars with symmetrical body ends when used in a child- and pet-free home.

I certainly wouldn't trust them on stage for any instrument, especially a bass guitar which has a much higher centre of gravity and makes most of these small stands too unstable.

A heavy duty "A-frame" stand would probably be OK but I suspect that it would fit in a gig bag.

I use a Meideal FP10, it holds up my 35" five strings no problem, and with a little shift in the dangly-angle as you're putting it down, it works on my Jazz V too. It won't hold a bass up on a waltzer or anything, but I haven't had it fall over yet in about 18 months of using it. The only real problem I have with it is that it stows away so small I keep leaving it places!

I use a strap to secure my bass to the side of the speaker cab, or to secure the gigbag to the side of the speaker cab, so I can just slide the bass into it when we stop for a break. It works if you have one tall cab or two stacked cabs. Markbass do/did a purpose made strap for this.
