Would we consider getting it up on a popular social media account, such a bassporn on instagram, for more publicity for tech users?

I am sure that when mixed a podcast can be made available (with the appropriate accreditation) across many platforms.  I'd suggest however that Basschat is the first site to release a 'cast with a follow-up elsewhere the following day/week

Well, there's my potential contribution well and truly scuppered, then. I was about to embark on an interesting exposé on the do's and don't's of successful radish cultivation, but I fear that, if the intention is to produce 'sound-bites' and slick talk, I'd maybe not be the best person to deliver such. However, I could propose a short (a few hours..?) on how to build a model airplane, or dietary tips for diabetics. An in-depth analysis of the monthly Challenge entries..? My favourite version of 'Dark Star', copiously illustrated with medium-length (twenty minutes or so...) extracts..? A lecture on home recording minimalism; how to compress all one's gear into less than one square metre..? And for the older listener, armchairs and how to choose 'em..?
Hmm... The more I think about it, the more attractive the idea becomes, more especially if video is not required. Let's test my 'hipness' with some modern, 'youf' phraseology, then...
'Hit me up when you're done jawing, to take the above subjects to the next level. Let's get this show on the road.:sun_bespectacled:'

I think this is an uber idea , I have never really understood the concept of podcasts,  but this could be ace 👍

Caveat .... how many regional accents would need subtitles 🤔 , or worse , no brummies FFS , it is supposed to be interesting 😄

We would also need to invest in a special filter for the Welsh language members 😉

I'm following this with interest. If it happens, I'll make sure to share it on Basschat's Facebook and Twitter, as well as mentioning it in my column. :)

Thanks for this - I don't know how peeps (on both sides) would feel about a closer link than that with the magazine? Feed each other content and promote each other to some extent???

I would also suggest that it would have to include content not on the forum to encourage listeners but without gaining them at the expense of the forum - for those that do not listen to podcasts.

Audio would be a perfect complement to the forum - I for one would enjoy listening to sound samples in the flow of a podcast which I don't bother to click on in a forum post.

I would definitely listen to a weekly summary of the compressor thread for example, maybe with some clips. Or, the Top 3 NBD/NAD/NCD threads. Or rig rundowns, again with clips.

A good example of the value of audio but perhaps a bit extreme tech for some of us :-?

Thanks to those who have offered to make this happen, I await with interest 🙂

Great idea!

Looking forward to the first one. ☺

Once it's up and running, can I suggest that we link this idea to the various regional Bass Bashes, where there will be opportunities to get some fantastic content for the podcasts.

For example, the SE Bash has had so many good workshops and guest speakers over the years, much of which would have made for interesting and relevant podcast material...

Good suggestion!

Anyone who captures useable audio from Basschat events could submit their recordings to the podcast team.  As you say, when we're up and running and assuming a favourable reception from the membership it could be a regular thing.  We'd only need a couple of nuggets of good information extracted from a recording of a workshop or guest speaker to back up a Site Events news item read out by one of the team.

Absolutely no prob re. getting audio from the bashes. I usually record almost everything on video, so adding a dedicated, good quality audio recorder will be no problem at all. Looking forward to this! :)

Thanks @Silvia Bluejay that would be amazing!

It would be nice to have a bit of a double bass discussion from the uprights amongst us. I'm sure there's a few db-curious on BC

I agree.  In fact I'd go as far as to say that the double bassists mustn't get left out.

Perhaps we should co-opt a double bassist onto the podcast team?

I think you're in danger of spreading yourselves too thinly. I've been taking to Akio and have suggested a rough format along the lines of:

-News

-Interesting threads this week/month

-Interesting items for sale this week/month

-Topic of the week/month (short scales - why?...  Graphite - all it's cracked up to be?... How to use a delay pedal... Overdrive on bass... plectrum - yes or no?....)

-Answer Qs sent in about previous show

-What's the question next week? send any questions to...

-end (total runtime about 60 mins)

I'd suggest to begin with not having sound clips and samples but just keep it to two people talking clearly about the issues at hand. Like being in the pub. Sound clips and so on (if recorded) could be added as downloads perhaps in a dedicated podcast thread which would be closed to comments except by the team.

Anyway that would be my suggestion.

I totally agree. For the first pilot I think it should stay focussed. My DB suggestion was really throwing an idea into the pot for the future if it takes off - which from reactions so far seems very positive. (That's why I posted in this thread rather than the questions thread)

I know nothing about podcasts, never listened to one, but this one has caught my attention. I can see it being perfect for the drive home after a gig, a lot of us usually have a good hours drive post gig and it has been mentioned many times that a lot like to just have some kind of talk show on rather than music. The problem I would have with a separate thread for any sound clips is that I would have to then relisten to the podcast along with clicking links which seems very disjointed to me. The podcast would be missing something if soundclips were discussed without the actual clips being played. Personally I'd rather just a standalone talkshow if clips couldn't be done.

Wow

an hour sounds ambitious to be , I really know nothing about podcasts at all , I've never even listened to one !! I guess it comes over like radio chat , but an hours worth is surely going to take some putting together 😳

Im not sure what I can do to help but I am crossing my fingers it goes really well 👍

I'd agree that an hour sounds too long. 30 minutes should be about right. Keep the topics short and snappy and everything moving along at a smart pace. My favourite podcast is about 40 minutes long but once you've removed all the advertising and credits theres about 30 minutes of actual content.

An hour flies by, trust me. Especially if the podcast wants to be relaxed and conversational. Listen to the podcast I posted earlier. Two guys talking about watches with a rough theme each week. Buy you wouldn’t set an actual time, just a rough idea about how long to chat in each section.

The idea with the companion sound clips would be so presenters could say ‘check out the clips if you like’ so you can hear them another time. Otherwise it would get complicated to edit to begin with. Again, the podcast I posted they say ‘see the blog for the pictures of the watches we’re looking at today’

How often do people post sound clips here? Rarely. You wouldn’t want to go out if your way to attain them, and then what sort of quality?

Nah keep it conversational, relaxed and uncomplicated before anything else creeps in.

I like that.

If the podcast is to stand alone it shouldn't link out to stuff at all.  We already have the forum for that and if non-member listeners want to find out more, they're more inclined towards signing up.

I had 45 minutes overall duration in mind for some reason.

Haha , trust me folks we've got this. 😉 @ped we're working to format, we've got it all covered in a BC Podcast Group Message I'll send you an Invite now.

As for time, it's going to be pretty long, I'd guess 1:45 - 2 hours with all the features and an interview with @Chownybass we've got planned. But fret not I think you'll all be happy with it. We can react to feedback and get more people involved once we have the pilot out. Folk can see where we're at production wise and make a more accurate critique when we've got it finished.

At present though I think the most realistic format if it gets "green lit" will be a 2 to 3 hour cast released once a month. Then it's logistically reasonable and folk can listen to it in sections, this is the internet you can pause and pick up where you left off, you don't have to listen to it all in one go. 😋

Think of it as an audio monthly magazine.

I like the idea of 45 mins

Looking forward to listening to the pilot! If ,as opposed to this long initial episode, 45 minutes is then deemed to be the best length, would it not be possible to record a full 90 mins and then split it in two? Perhaps publishing the two halves with a couple of weeks' hiatus rather than a whole month? Indeed, my initial idea of a podcast was that it would be weekly and only last for 20 to 30 minutes, but I'm probably a bit out of date with current trends. :)

Anythings possible, but I'll just give you a rough idea of things;

At present on @ped's recommendation we have 6 segments not including an intro/outro. That's 5 roughly 10 min segments and a 20-30 min feature segment plus a 45min to an hour interview. In half an hour there wouldn't be time to say anything meaningful about much of the content we have to work with. The majority of podcasts in the charts are 2-3hours an episode, my personal approach would be why split what the listener can pause? Podcasts are a long form media, especially if you're including some form of interview. What real insight can you get into a topic or someones' mind and body of work in a 3-5min sound bite? Which is what we'd be looking at doing a half hour cast.

That's going to be a huge turn-off for a lot of people. I would strongly advise holding half of that back for episode two.

S.P.

I appreciate that's a possibility but we have to remember; that the same could be said for a shorter episode. This is all an opening gambit and it's just the pilot. Nothing's set in stone and it'll be easier to focus in on a workable format once we have this out so we can get objective feedback. Ideally I want this to be something everyone can enjoy but it's an impossible task to please everybody at once. As I've said I want this to be a representation of the forums wants/needs, so once we've put out the pilot we'll make a proper feedback thread and poll the opinions that people put forward to see where we end up. Until then everything's in a liminal zone really. I just need to make something happen for now, so sticking with this format/length is my safest bet for actually getting something coherent together. I mean everyone could turn around tell us it's terrible and the idea could languish in the bardo of unrealized potential for all we know. So lets not get ahead of ourselves.
