Recommend me a bass please

Recommended Posts

I'd second the used Yamaha BB1024 and add the X for aesthetic appeal (i.e. BB1024X).

Other than that you could look for a used Fender Deluxe Active P Bass Special (yes that's actual name...). I had one briefly and, other than the awful gold plastic faux-anodised pickguard, it was a fine bass that I sold too cheaply...

For your price tag, this is a real luthier bass with original 80's Seymour Duncan PJ, a slim and fast neck through, ebony fingerboard and quite original look. And really built to last !

Thanks for all the recommendations so far everyone, I had chance to try a few bits and bobs out today, including a few Yamahas, not quite found 'the one' yet. Im gonna have to try and locate a Sire and a G&L to try I think.

What's wrong with this bass?

How about just upgrading the pickups and pots?

Well, that will probably happen as well at some point tbh…..but.....new bass! ;)

You might try a Maruszczyk Jake if you can stretch the budget. There's one for sale here on BC at the moment

Or one of their ex-exhibition items direct from the manufacturer

PS. I saw your show in Islington, earlier in the year. 👍

Ooh! yes that was a fun show, thank you very much for coming along, hope you enjoyed it :)

My fretless is an Ibanez, (SRF700) and is in my opinion the finest bass I've ever played, so I have history with them. I nipped to Mansons in Exeter yesterday and had an hour or two noodling around on various Ibanezeseses, a few Yamahas, tried a Warwick Streamer, a couple of denominations of Music man stuff and one or two miscellaneous items, none of which seemed to sit right.

I think I'm doing what I used to despair of in others - needing a P. (fnerk) Albeit with a J neck. The search continues. Loving the suggestions - many thanks all!

In the meantime I'm also gonna look at Chris_b 's advice up there and  see about bringing my existing bass back up to scratch.

Squier JV. Mine weighs in about 8 1/2lb. Not jazz nut width but the neck is shallow and so, makes it easy to play. Has a great sound with stock pups. No need to upgrade anything. Examples do crop up within your price range. The SQ series and E series are great examples too.

A second hand American Special would suit the P bass with J bass neck - its J bass in depth but the width is a bit between the two.  Alternatively I also find the Squier Classic Vibe 70s neck a bit less chunky.  Neither is particularly light though and both come with P pickup only.  Not sure what the necks are like on the Squier Mustang bass but I think they are lightweight compared to the Precision.

I'd highly recommend Sandberg. I'm lucky to own 2 and they're both absolute players. German, hand built, construction and materials 2nd to none, bags of tone and an absolute joy to play. Seriously, nothing else I've ever picked up comes close. There's a Basic on BC now for less than £600 which is worth a look, although I was super lucky and picked up my Basic KT (double buck tone monster) for £575 off eBay, but that was a steal tbh.

Bass Centre Bruce Thomas Profile bass - it's a 41mm nut but a slender neck profile (hence the name) with a smooth (not glossy) neck finish. Well worth an audition at £495

Edit: sorry, just spotted you were after PJ. They also do the Norman Watt-Roy tribute PJ but it's a 43mm nut:
