I've just been to a car boot and came home with this...

Apparently the folks' son painted it some time back.

I've now got to strip off the paint and see what's underneath.

I don't know anything about it, other than it says VOX on the pickups.

Yep - that's my plan.

I think I'll be in the modding section asking for tips on how to remove the makeover without stripping the original finish. (If only I'd had it a day before, I'd have taken it to the bash bash and got some advice f2f.)

My first bass!  Single burns pickup though.  The previous owner modified it.  The pickup was deeper than the body so he glued a rounded circle of wood on the back to cover up the hole.  No truss rod and seriously short scale and it cost me £5 in 1965.  I thought it was wonderful until I got another bass and realised that it was infact rubbish!

Enjoy your find and the refinishing and be shocked as to how much it's worth.

Excellent! I’m not sure the original finish will be up to much even if you did de-gunk.  For a fiver(!), and with 3 different types of tuner fitted (another”!”) I’d go maybe just natural.

I hadn't noticed the tuners - they're "characterful"!

Well, I've just tried playing it and it's a bit hokey-cokey, also one of the machines is way too stiff.

I think I'll disassemble it and try some experiments with removing the overpainting.

In the end I'm only in it for a fiver; I would like to get to something playable, but if I just end up with a wall hanger, then that'll be alright.
