Ultimate Hard Rock / Metal Covers set - what's in it?

Hi all

One of my bands is the dreaded 'hard rock/metal covers band' - so if you're sniffy about those - move on to something more palatable now :D .

We've had a girl singer until recently and have just settled on a replacement (due to young kids and sleep deprivation!) - who's a bloke and very different. Bit of a rock belter, in the Bon Scott sort of range. We've also been fancying going a bit heavier recently so this should fit well. We've got loads of old fart Dad rock in the back catalogue already but room for a bit more and some new stuff - we're having to drop quite a lot of material as they are female centric songs (the thought of a 17 stone, bald guy singing 'All I wanna do is make love to you', 'beach' or 'You oughta know' is funny and disturbing in equal measure...O.o)

We do this for fun - not looking for loads of well paid gigs - just rocking nights out with appropriate crowds 'giving it some.' Two capable guitarists (so dual leads/ harmonies are possible) - drummer solid, but not that hot on the old double kicking - though he covers it pretty well.

So, just for fun really - what would be your suggestions for our "Ultimate Hard Rock / Metal Covers set" - down the Dog and Duck....

1,2,3 - go!

How about having a go at this classic :)

I've only ever seen 2 pub bands pull it off (admittedly I was in one of them xD) and it's a good bass work out as well as a favourite with the crowd who don't usually expect to hear it.

Older stuff we used to play that always went down well...

  • Budgie - Breadfan
  • The Cult - Rain, She Sells Sanctuary, Lil Devil (take your pick)
  • Megadeth - Peace Sells
  • Deep Purple - Burn
  • Jesus & Mary Chain - April Skies/Blues From a Gun
  • Marillion - Assassing (We used to make a right pigs ear of this but it still went down well with the crowd)

The Phantom of the Opera is a good call from Osiris.

Some good stuff in there Graham - we've got a few of them already. Which would you pick out of that set as being 'the best' - love this auto correct thing 'whizzed off' indeed :-)

I feel Whizzed Off when it's time to play that one, god-awful song as far as I'm concerned, but the singer likes it xD

Bodies, Killing In the Name, Holy Diver, No-One Knows, Rebel Yell and NIB are ones that often go down well, people like the ones they can sing along with.

Also, as these songs aren't the sort you often hear; so when, for instance, a Faith No More fan hear's From Out Of Nowhere, they're normally quite chuffed to hear it from a pub band, so that always helps.

Here's a video from the last time I played with them

Back in the 90s I used to drum in a rock covers band. Generally we went down pretty well at functions, some of the more successful 'harder' tracks being

Black Betty -Ram Jam

Dont fear the reaper -BoC

Dr Feelgood -Motley Crue

Big bad moon -Joe Satriani

Black hole sun -Soundgarden

The rooster -Alice in Chains

Rock n roll outlaw - Rose Tattoo
