What was the issue with shape and size for your ex-Ibby?  Neck dive, low mass, belly-rash?

I regard my kit build as a test bed for ideas.  Glad to meet someone of a similar mind.

The body is just too small it feels like Im playing a uke (one of the reasons I would never buy a violin bass)

By the time I had tweaked the template to fit the ibby body it worked out about 30mm top and bottom smaller and about 25mm shorter than the original body

Ah.  That's a shame because the proportions were interesting looking taken in isolation.  You'd have to bear in mind that I own two paddle basses though.

Yeah it was fun building it but it was just a test that didn’t turn out quite right for me so I’ll have to wait and see if the new shape/size is better

I’ve been looking at body timber/finish options for this build and I’ve decided on Red Grandis body (because I can get it very cheaply) with White Macassar ebony veneer front and back......

Or Pine body with Wenge veneer front and back (cheaper option).......in case you haven’t guessed I’m looking for a nice contrast

Then probably a wipe on poly finish

That white macassar looks splendid!

Yeah that’s what I thought to start off with but I dont know if it just looks like grain filled ash the other contenders are:

That'll gleam with a coat of Andy's Magic fluid - No innuendos please!!>:(

Seconded.

I was swaying more towards the white Ebony, Olive or the Wenge

I thought the Olive looked a bit different as I haven’t seen it used as a guitar top before (to be fair I haven’t looked tho).....

The only olive topped Guitar I could find is this.......

Looking at it on a guitar I’m not too sure now

But where as this I really like.....

Except if I do it, it would be Wenge top and bottom with a pine core and not a neck thru..........

Oh and chrome hardware...........

Here you go...

Search "Olive Wal" for more info.

Hmmm....I worked on that Wal, Mick.  I didn't  think it was olive wood.  It was beautiful, though :). One of the best built basses I've ever had my sticky mitts on ;)

Solved the mystery.  It's Rippled Ash, sometimes called Olive Ash :)

And looking at that ad, this wasn't the one I worked on, which was the same body woods and style but was a fretless :D. They are, as I said earlier, stupendously well made basses!

For that kind of money I hope they are!!! I would have to sell my truck to afford a bass like that!!!.......

Body all cut then made my makeshift bench sander......

Just going to order my veneer now I’ve decided on the White Macassar Ebony so as soon as it turns up I can crack on again

Body blank is gluing up as we speak for the Streamer build so I’ll post the progress on that thread.......
