Possible scam - this original 66 Mustang or Mikey Way Squire body?

Well, you’ll never guess what colour it is......

it was the one going in the Bassist Ireland classifieds. Made in 2004/2005. In great nick bar a ding near the 3rd fret dot on the E string side. Sounds and plays heavenly. Tone up it can do a good Maiden clank, tone down it’s a glorious soulful thump. It’s a different old school vibe than my Precision with flats. Not better or worse, but simply awesome. I am in love.

Sorry for the thread hijack OP.

Ah, more oly white loveliness! Class!

Just took scratchplate off - look at this hatchet job! Ideas? Could this be squire? Or later body from 66?

Looks like an original Mustang routing to me, especially considering that plate on the bottom, but someone has done a really awful job of perhaps trying to fit a standard Precision pickup in there at some point.
If this routing wasn't on the original product description from Mr Baxter, I'd perhaps be having a quiet word, because if I'd known about that at point of purchase, I'd want a few extra quid off.

Might have been added perhaps, but because the routing around the mustang pickup is so shoddy, I'd probably suggest that the mustang routing and plate are original.....could be wrong though.
Yeah, it's still listed on his website lol

have sent pics to seller and see what happens - i thought the price reflected respray - description says excellent condition and no mention of routing - feel a bit sick now!

It's not going to affect the bass, still a sweet bass, but could affect resale value. He'll likely say that he didn't check under the scratch plate.....I always find that a difficult line to follow for a vintage specialist.
If it's not true, it's not honest, if it is true (most likely as I think Andy is a nice guy), then why isn't that happening at a vintage specialist?!

the bass sounds great but having paid full price, im not going to get that back, if i was to sell later - it's crazy prices what vintage guitars go for now - i was originally going for MIJ for around £700, then the JMJ road worn was coming out for £969 - so though 1200 for an original was a better bet - but now feel let down

I think Sibob has hit the nail on the head. It looks very much like an amateur attempt to fit a regular precision pickup in there (seems to happen a lot to old mustangs).

It won’t affect what is still a cool bass but you should have been informed and the seller should have known about it, especially as I thought he dismantled most of the basses he has in, or used to.

You seem to have been really concerned about the bass from the start so I think you would be perfectly within your rights to return it. If it was me, I would suggest seeing if there was some haggling room and seeing if you could get a decent chunk off what you paid.

As the Bass had been modified anyway, I would perhaps look at having the route properly done for a Precision pickup to smarten it up, and you have the option then to swap in the future. I doubt it would do anything to the value, especially if you have the work done by someone with a lot of credibility and shielded properly etc.

Seller replied very quickly and arranged a fair discount and as Sibob suggested didnt look but usually does and apologised - very good customer service . Also offered full refund but I want to keep the bass so took discount - thanks everyone for all replies. It's a good forum here!

Very cool, yeah he's a good guy! And definitely a cool bass. It's a good idea to have the mess of a rout tidied up to actually accommodate a Precision pickup. But if it were me, I wouldn't do this until I thought I might sell it, just so you could then use it as a 'feature'. As it is now, enjoy it, can't see it under the scratch plate, and actually probably makes the bass that little bit lighter haha.

Excellent news! I have never heard anything but good things about Mr Baxter and that is great customer service.

I really need to stop looking at threads about Mustangs, it’s driving me nuts with envy!

yes Sibob now to get on with just enjoying it, i think what i might do is use money for another body in future and tidy this one up - i love the dakota red but also sunburst or natural - but for now feeling happy again - Nathan i sold my P Bass and Chowny bass after getting this mustang, as it kinda does the job of both for me - join the club?

I am desperately trying to join the club, Christmas and a 1 year old boy are depleting my bank account rapidly though. Soon......

I had an original Dakota red mustang that had been refretted.

I sold it last year for around £1200.

i think your body looks original but as you say has been butchered round the pickup cavity but the brass insert is right.

If you can photograph the underside of the pickguard with the pickup attached and the control cavity I can give you an opinion of the pickup and wiring, etc

in terms of price, the one I sold would now sell at a dealer for say £1500 plus

assuming your pickup, knobs, wiring, etc are original, then if, after discount you paid less than say £950, I would say that would be OK

yes guard later and i put thumbrest on, pups are Kent Armstrong -  pics of neck and neckplate are original paid £1000 with discount - so thinking 950 is about right but wanted to keep it and wasnt going to haggle over 50
