I'm guessing this is the list?

https://www.standard.co.uk/goingout/music/the-20-greatest-british-rock-bands-of-all-time-a3655391.html

On The Cure:
"From the the stark and intense nature of albums like 1982’s Pornography, through to the more flamboyant and playful records like Wish, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Disintegration"
Surely this has been written by someone who has never listened to the dark and not-at-all-flamboyant-or-playful Disentegration album.

Not the worst list I've ever seen but The Cure and Oasis, Super Furry Animals, all great bands but top 20 greatest of all time? Pretty subjective (as usual)

All these and no Sex Pistols ? Crikey.....

Yes, sorry. I meant to put the link in and forgot. I really like The Cure and personally would put them in above The Stone Roses. All a matter of taste I guess, but no Genesis or Marillion either and the absence of Motörhead is just plain wrong.

All very subjective, but this list is really stretching the boundaries of the genre of a rock band.
A lot on the list I would never consider to be placed within the category of rock band, some are just pure pop, indie or punk.
IMO there are twelve bands included that would not be on there.
Where are the likes of Cream, Free, Whitesnake etc etc ?

The only band I like here are The Smiths and a positive dislike for most of the rest clouds my objectivity. I much prefer US rock bands even though I'm not American. I'm no fan but am surprised Maiden and Judas Priest aren't in this list considering their sales, influence and longevity. But why the Stone Roses? Just two albums proper with the second being widely panned and largely irrelevant outside the UK

I suppose it brings into question what greatness is. Sales? Size of fan base? Releases? Innovation? Influence on others? It is pretty subjective and it's a nonsense. I know we're talking bands (so no Bowie/Elton John, Kate Bush etc.), but even so, Super Furry Animals?

Looking at the list (see below), I do wonder about the obviousness of some of the includees and absentees. No Yes? No Fleetwood Mac? No Sex Pistols? The Police? I'd also throw in bands/artists like Japan, Duranduran, ELP, Genesis, Muse, Mott The fecking Hoople, Depeche Mode, Cream.

To save you the bother of clicking the link, here's the list:
20. Joy Division
19. Super Furry Animals
18. The Jam
17. T. Rex
16. Roxy Music
15. The Who
14. Black Sabbath
13. Blur
12. Queen
11. The Kinks
10. The Stone Roses
9. The Clash
8. The Cure
7. Oasis
6. The Smiths
5. The Rolling Stones
4. Pink Floyd
3. Radiohead
2. Led Zeppelin
1. The Beatles

[EDIT] I add for your deliberation two post comments by someone called petrometro1 on the ES webpage. Pretty succinct.

when will journalists and the media ever get a grip on the English Language? Firstly, the most overhyped word bar none is "Iconic". An Icon is an Orthodox Religious Painting for heavens sake. Secondly; If this list is of the most iconic bands how is that at all possible? Its either Iconic or it isn't. Journos have a problem with unique. Fairly unique, very unique. Get real; its either unique or it isn't. As Nigel [another commentator] states.. this list does NOT contain bands that were clearly playing before he [the author of the piece, Harry Fletcher] was born. It doesn't contain Jethro Tull, Eric Clapton, Hermans Hermits, Yes, ELP, The Nice, King Crimson, Supertramp Genesis... in essence the article is not worth the paper its written on. To compare Oasis with Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones is pathetic.

2) as thought. has been with The Standard since September 2017. Resume for linked in is written entirely in the first person singular. He was in 6th form in 2010 so suspect he was born around 1993. That's about as credible as this list gets.

+1
Although Maiden is technically heavy metal
Technically heavy metal is sub genre of rock so it fits. In any case Maiden is heavy rock compared to what gets touted as metal now.

+1 for Maiden though, must be the most overlooked yet most successful, influential and popular British band of all time.

Did that say "Rock" bands? Then why pray are T.Rex in there? nothing wrong with them but they are plainly not a Rock band. On sales longevity and live performances alone to exclude Dire Straits, Status Quo, Deep Purple and Jethro Tull is plain stupid. I think the author needs to look up the term Rock.

They are just trying to cover as many genres as possible but keeping it to 20 total as typical cliched online lists go, hence they have Zep so can't have Deep Purple, they have Floyd so can't have Genesis or Yes. It's all pretty pointless.

Yep, he probably just copied the list from somewhere else anyway.

Its done the trick though, generated loads of hits from people who wouldn't normally hit evening standard clickbait. Got to pay Osbornes fat cat salary somehow...
