Gig bags - worth it???

So I am a big Warwick fan and saw in the classified section a custom something and all the rest of it but it comes with a leather gig bag. So as a man in the market for a nice gig bag for my latest Warwick I was curious how much one would be if you could buy one. I expected it to be pricey but I am not sure what to think when I saw it. Price of a decent bass. I know if you have a nice instrument and if you do take it out you want it protected and you spend on a good protection for said instrument but for a gig bag I thought it was a bit steep. What do you guys think?

You can get a decent gig bag for under £100, and if you want a handmade leather one, you can get one from Maruszczyk for half the amount Warwick seem to be asking:

I had seen those Maruszczyk and I was just interested what Warwick would cost. I knew from experience that anything Warwick would be over priced but 400 euros. I thought it looked good and perfect but for that price. No way. It would be interesting to know how many they actually sell.

Way over the top, but then again I see no point in a leather bag. I use a Gator G-PG Bass gig bag for my basses, including my Roscoe Signature and have no concerns re damage. The UK cost appears to be between £ 110 and £ 130 dependent on where you shop.

And the Maruszczyks are (IMO) much better looking and potentially better made! That Warwick bag is comedy pricing at its finest.

I wouldn't want a leather gig bag, i would prefer nylon and padding, and all the ones I have are less than £50 and have done an excelent job at protecting basses that have been dropped.

That much leather is also going to weigh a tonne (my 1st reaction was the same as everyone else incidentally)/ A nylon bag or you may as well use a hard case.

Had one of these for years and it is excellent, even secures the neck too. almost 10% of the price.

I bought one of these recently (along with their single gig bag) and it’s really nice. Lightweight and they’ve clearly put some thought into the strap locations because, despite not being padded, the gig bag is more comfortable on the shoulders than my other cases with thick padded straps. My only complaint is I think they could do with a bit more padding at the base of the case, where the end strap pin would meet the ground. I’ve added some padding of my own there to solve the issue.

Agreed.

When it comes to gig bags, I prefer something like the Fusion F1 or Urban. All the comfort of a good rucksack, but with tons of protection for your instrument and pockets for cables, accessories etc. They're something like £130-40 but well worth it in my opinion. Very well made.

I have a leather Harvest gig bag. It was hardly used when I bought it from the BC classifieds.

The price of good gig bags has gone through the roof. I couldn't buy a new leather one these days.

Thank you! yes, my old 90's Warwick rock bag's are like that - not too comfy, and the straps have started to come away from the case. The Mono cases (which I really like too) have the extra padding, but they are a bit pricey - however, a £1,500 - £2,000 Bass in a £150 gig bag.. might be about right?

I can recommend the Gator G-PG bags - I have both this one and the dual. If you’re interested in them then it’s worth keeping an eye on Amazon's prices. The dual bag seems to come down to about £135 when Amazon have it in stock themselves, and I bought the single one linked above a bit earlier in the year for £102, though I’ve not kept an eye on the price since.

Totally agree. In my opinion (within reason) one shouldn’t be afraid of spending a decent chunk of change to protect their instruments. Within reason though. The Warwick bag defies all reason, especially when considering some of the fantastic competition out there. This is like the new Darkglass cabs all over again

[/quote]I’ve always liked these, especially the handle above the pocket. If I had to replace any of mine, I’d get one of these.

Quite tempted by the "hard foam" gig bag/cases. They offer the protection of a hard case, with the weight of a gig bag.

I've got a nice grey Mono M80 Gig Sleeve which was £125 and a Black Protection Racket Gig Case 'clone' which was £50. The Mono has a nicer outer but both are (I think) 10 mm high- density foam and do the job. Not too bulky but offer good protection.

I've also had a Gator hard foam case which was rectangular and just a bit bulky for my tastes.I almost said I had it but sold it recently along with my
Squier P Bass.

I've got this one and can absolutely recommend it. Its a bit under the radar compared to the usual Mono and Fusion ones but incredibly well made with great protection.

(And i picked it up for £50 from Amazon as a warehouse clearance item - i should have had a stripey t shirt and a mask on........)

For £40-50 you can get a non branded or Stagg type hardcase. Much more protection.

I had one for for a while, having bought it for the reason you state. I got rid fairly quickly because they have all the inconvenience of a case that you want a gig bag for. I stuck to as gig bag in the end.
