MONO power amps ?

II have been looking (in vain)) to find a MONO amp of around 200+watts to drive a 2 X 8" mid/high box.I really need it to have a small chassis/footprint , not rackmount.
I know I am probably out of my tree but could power amp intended for in-car use be used or would the power supply be a problem?
If not commercially available does anyone know of any kit builds which might do the job?

You are not totally out of your tree but to use a good quality, high power car amp and 12V supply would be expensive and quite bulky. you do not say what the impedance of the cab is but if it is 8 ohm you need to look for an amp rated at 400-500 watts. This is because solid state amps whether Class D or Class A/B reach rated power into 4 ohms and would be closer to half that power into 8 ohms.

The ISP amp quoted above is rated at 180 watts peak and 90 Watts RMS into 4 Ohms. Probably well underpowered for your needs. The Bose will be very expensive and as usual with Bose, has no specs as they are intended for use with the Bose PA systems.

What pre-amp are you using? Do you want the amp built in?Active Crossover?

Don't mean to derail this thread, but surely any 2-channel power amp with the option to bridge the channels is ... erm ... a mono amp?

Yes and no.

The problem with bridging into mono is that it changes the impedance requirements of the cab(s) being driven. A stereo amp capable of driving an 8Ω or 4Ω cab each side will require an 8Ω or 16Ω cab when used in bridge mode. So for one 8Ω cab it's fine, so long as the cab is capable of handling the bridged power, other cabs and combinations may require specialised cables to get the impedance load right.

Thank you all responders. What I have not made clear by some of the responses is that size is crucial for me. A 19" rackmount will not do the job.
The cab is 4 ohms, 2 x Eminence LA8-CNMB neos'.
The Labgruppen looks good but I haven't checked out the price yet.
Any more suggestions gratefully received.

The poweramp i use is a KMT DC5 dual channel that goes down to 2ohms in stereo (500W each) and down to 4ohms (1000W) in bridge mode. It's class-H so no lack of heft and only 1U rack size. It's a bit heavy mind.

To clarify I am wanting a powered cab, not a stand alone amp. I have limited space to put it and using one side of a rackmount stereo amp will not fill the bill. I think the GK 200 MB might do, the Demeter would definitely be OK, but I is out of my price range

Sorry mate, but that does anything BUT clarify.

Your original post said that you wanted a power amp to drive an existing 2x8 cab, so a powered cab is surely exactly what you don't want?

OK, all responders, I have been guilty of expecting you all to be mind-reading clairvoyants, apologies !
I thought (stupidly) less parameters would be less confusing.
So the over all project is this. I have the 2 x 8" enclosure. There is compartment at the back (at pres. a leads and odds and sods store) approx. 35cms wide, 13cms high &15cms deep.
It is into this space I am hoping to fit power amp of around 200-500watts @4 ohms, no eq. but may be a HPF.
Why didn't I say that in the first place????

Can it be done ?
