I've never seen a major 7 written with a line through the 7. I imagine that could be confusing, a lot of people, me included write their 7s like that anyway.

Other ways are M7, and sometimes a triangle.

Just a guess - perhaps it's optional? Five separate notes could be tricky on a guitar or keyboard. Or perhaps to reduce the dissonance a bit - a 5th and 6th together doesn't sound too nice in my view.
