as some of you are aware I had a bass given me on loan and as soon as I start getting serious with it the person wants it back ! it is a squire jass bass vm I think.

I have budget of 2-300 pounds and I am loking to get something same or similar

I came across some short scale basses for sale and was curious a I do find the stretch on a standard bass difficult , and at 53 not getting any younger are they worth considering ?

Any advice would be great thanks

Give some idea of your location; that might inspire someone close to you..? Don't be in a hurry; that 's a sure way of making a mistake that you'll regret. Take the time to find your bass. Have a look through the ads in the Marketplace here, there are several good basses in your price bracket...

...including short-scale basses.

Hope this helps. B)

A short scale bass at 32" will be a difference in reach of just 1" and 30" scale is a difference in reach of 2" because the scale is between the nut and bridge, not all at the nut

Strings will feel slightly floppier on the 32" and a bit more floppy on the 30" , but you can offset this to a degree by using higher tension strings.

This will obviously be harder to achieve on the 30"

If you liked the Jazz bass then a Squier CV or VM bass will fit the bill... but if you're hankering after a short scale I'd go for a Squier VM SS Jaguar. P/J pickups and a 30" scale. There are a bunch of stores listing them for £187 new but none in stock. It's still on the Squier site so hopefully is a model refresh rather than discontinued:

If you need one in a hurry there is one here but it's £50 more!

Of course check eBay for used examples!

matching headstock. Absolutely mint condition. Send me a PM for more details if you're interested.
Will be putting it up for sale on here shortly.

How long have you been playing? Finding it a stretch could merely be a symptom of inexperience/newness on the bass, rather than a fundamantal incompatability between a long scale bass and your anatomy (and age). I have only ever played long scale basses and "the stretch" is perceivable during warming up, but once warmed up and playing actual music rather than abstract technical exercises, its basically a non-issue. Yes I'm sure a short-scale might be more comfortable for some, or allow a theoretical greater stretch in certain isolated situations, so no worries I respect that for some, short scales are the way to go but don't put yourself into this group quite yet.

A bit different from the above selections but in the 200-300 range, I would go for an Ibanez SR300 with the powerspan pickups. Great build quality, a good selection of tones are available and the neck is nice and narrow like a Jazz.

Check them out.

Not a shortscale, but lovely and light and also rare (ish) so should hold it's value

Can be had for less than asking price based on the original pickup being re-installed and the Lindy Fralin taken out

As always on BC - ask a simple question and get loads of complicated answers..  ...

Just thinking where the next bass bash is and whether the OP can get there. usually a wide range of gear, most of which you won't see in your typical music shop.

Also might be a good idea if the OP posted their location as many of us with several basses which may make his choice easier if he were able to try a few.

Thanks for all your reply's and wow what a response and choice ! I write this in a rush as mad week with daughter moving out into her own home , but to be truthful I don't know my a... from my elbow when it comes to bass I do like the thought of a shorter scale but concerned I may lose some feel and punch with a 30 inch scale ?

I will have a look through posts when I have more time I have a couple of weeks before i need to hand back the the other one

Thanks very much for all your help
