gobasserk
Al, can you hear the more straight sound of the reverse pu in the recording? It is not as boomy as a normal P.... I like this, every sound guy loves it 🙂
AndyTravis
Just been recording some bits, the new strings have settled on the 424x’s - need another tweak - Bit buzzy 😩
gobasserk
What strings are you using on your BB's? I usually string them with D'Addario steels. But on the red BB of the recording I tested some Rotos. I'll stick to the D'Addarios...

I’ve been using d’addario, but spotted some fenders at £13 a set so bought a load. think these had come to me with 45-105’s and I’ve gone down to 45-100, not huge jump but they had mega low action to start with…

It is definitely "tighter" than the normal BB P pup, but I wonder how much of that is due to the YYZ and how much is down to the reverse P? gobasserk
It's the pu position. The YYZ makes the sound more beafy... rather fat than thinner..! BB1000MA P-Mode (YYZ) Edited August 1, 2021 by gobasserk

And because it is a boring sunday I fiddled arround with some basses and played the 1000ma in P style mode because the J-pu falls in to the body cause it is fixed with the pu ring usualy...the P sytle pu works cause the ring is only optics... So as usual..Yamaha bass, cable, SDRUM pedal for the beat and a yyz for some sound...smartphone in front of a little HD20 Hartke combo. That's it. And just some weird riff that I figured out in 5 minutes. So nothing fancy. BB1000ma P style mode 35 minutes ago, gobasserk said: It's the pu position. PS I think @Ricky Rioli may well be interested in this discussion - he had a whole thread going on the subject of the reverse P! Maude
Reversing the P pickup is quite high up on the possibles to do list when my 424x arrives. It mainly depends on how the pickup ring has been made, and what it looks like flipped over. The routing and a new pickguard are the easy bit. The pickup ring could be left off if the underside isn't pretty, but I really like the look of them. It should be here by the end of the week so we'll see. Or go the whole hog and have double reverse P like Lee Sklars Presicion, albeit with the J still there.

gobasserk
It is a repost of my recording because it kind of went lost on the end of side 277 😉

I know the P pickup is a little closer to the neck than the trad P-spot. Will you simply swap the E/A and D/G positions? or leave the D/G in its place and move the E/A to the other side of it? Maude
2 hours ago, AndyTravis said: They’re countersunk on the top Face - I know because I have a gold set I was going to use but can’t… Ah yes, I can see now I've zoomed in on a picture. I thought the pickup surround was mounted on top of the scratchplate, now I can see the scratchplate is cut to fit outside of the surround. So the body is actually routed for the surround to sit into it slightly then. That's still no biggy though. My main issue is what the base of the surround looks like as it'll need fitting upside down if the pickup is reversed. All will become apparent when mine arrives. I'll see when I've had a play. I've always fancied a reverse P and this would make a great trial bass, was my thinking. Looking at pictures I think I'd just swap the E/A and D/G around. If the E/A was simply placed below the D/G, it would look nasty as it would be half in half out of the scratchplate. If the other way then the whole pickup would be too close to the neck I think. Looking at the space available, I don't think there's room for a double P in the scratchplate, not without looking cluttered anyway.
matbard
Calling all the BBPH owners (but for the others, too 😁 )! How do you set the action on these? What's your favourite settings?

matbard
4 minutes ago, gobasserk said: P pick up only ! 😄 (Sorry, couldn't resist) 🙂 My question could be silly, but I set up my bass like Peter (using that heavy .060 G string) and I put the neck dead straight by tightening the truss rod. I also reverted all the saddles on the "edge" side and went with thru-bridge stringing. I experience a little fret buzz, so I'd like to have the opinon of the others... gobasserk
I know... it was just a joke. I think, playing an artist model is one thing, doing it all exactly ike that star guy... makes only sense if you (try to) play like he does and if you are in playing exactly his kind of music. Because everyone has his way of playing and the world's best bass players set ups won't fit my playing. gobasserk
For example ... I adore Mark King ( who does not) and love the look of his Status signature basses. I was more than one time about to order one. But I did own several (other) Status basses and it's sound just did not fit my needs. I did rarely play other basses with more comfortable necks but the basses just don't rock in my very own opinion. The natural tone of a graphite bass is just not rock n roll. Of course you can throw some synh / distortion effects on it and make it work somehow... but a beautiful wooden growl... 4000 Pounds but it does not do that growl 🙂 Edited August 2, 2021 by gobasserk

matbard
Well... Actually I'm playing New Orders songs, so I took the bass to have that signature sound. I also have a very faithful Clone Theory replica made by a firm here in Italy and based on an old Reticon SAD 1024 IC. I have rather small hands (like PH), so I feel really comfortable with the bass set like him.
