December’s Composition Challenge is now underway!

^ Don’t panic! That’s not your muse this month.

…and it’s going to be a bit different :)

Firstly, well done to last month’s winners, The Boy and Lord Sausage. We’ll be using their choice of photo(s) to kick-start January’s challenge in the new year.

In the meantime, we’re going to do something a little different this month. So instead of composing to a photo, we’re running a covers competition - basically, choose a song or instrumental that you like and write your own cover version. You can be faithful to the original or far flung and left of field; the choice is yours.

All of the usual rules apply - click on the spoiler button below to read ‘em…
By entering the competition you agree to the Basschat Terms and Conditions and Forum Guidelines, which are designed to help ensure the forum remains free of offensive and/or illegal behaviour and material. In a nutshell:

1) Please avoid any content that other forum users may find offensive. If your track contains explicit lyrics, for example, then please warn other forum users so they can choose for themselves whether to listen to it.

2) Please make sure you have permission to use any 3rd party sounds included in your track (ie. sounds that you have not recorded yourself, such as samples of other people's music). The owners of Basschat accept no responsibility for infringements of copyright or other forms of legal ownership, which are solely the responsibility of competition entrants. If we spot any breaches of copyright then your track will be removed from the competition.

3) Entries should be no more than five minutes long and written/produced during 2016. No cheating!
…with a few additional caveats:

It doesn’t have to be a Christmas song! Quite the opposite (bah humbug, etc).

Don’t go lifting any samples from whatever song you intend to cover, as that will breach the usual terms and conditions leading to extreme punitive measures.

We for this month only, we recommend not using SoundCloud or YouTube to share your tracks (as their terms and conditions don't allow cover songs). Instead, have a look at Mixcloud or Dropbox instead.
If you have any questions, just holler.

>>> PRIZES! <<<

1st place gets a Basschat Polo shirt and a set of D'Addario NYXL Bass Strings

2nd and 3rd place also receive a set of D'Addario NYXL strings
String options for the prize are:

4-string: 40-95, 45-100, 45-105, 50-105
5-string: 5-130
6-string: 32-130

Big thanks to D'Addario for supporting this year's festive challenge. You guys rock! :santa2:

The deadline for entries is midnight on December 24th.

This sounds like a great idea, I have a whole load of ideas but only 37 minutes left on my Soundcloud account :o

Favourite so far is Minnie Ripperton , hmmm I could do it like the Photo comp, but put up 4 versions and choose the [s]best[/s] least worst at the death , sounds like a plan

Should be interesting. Covering a Minor Moondance, with a Major Moondance.
Or have I given the game away ? :D

>>> NEWSFLASH <<<

For this month only, we're welcoming any cover songs that have been recorded during 2016 (rather than only during December). Hopefully this will open up the challenge to plenty of newcomers. And feck it... it's the festive season so I'm feeling generous, and I haven't even started on the sherry :)

thats a relief, at least i have a couple in the bank.
i have been trying to get something together but i have been plagued by problems with my guitar. i changed the strings and gave it a clean and it seems to have released pressure in the neck somewhere and now the truss rod is jammed solid and i cannot get the intonation anywhere close to usable. for lead stuff its not really to obvious but chords are tooth-grinding levels of bad. i think it is pretty dead to be honest, a new neck at the very least by the look of it or maybe just replace it it with something of a bit higher quality. of course this has had a pretty negative effect on writing and recording. that said, i have a bass only thing which may come through yet.
Just a thought, are we allowed to upload covers to Soundcloud? Their policy says not: https://soundcloud.com/pages/copyright
Seems you're right. I've double-checked and their policy doesn't allow unlicensed covers; same as YouTube (although in practice you'll find lots of cover tracks on both...).

Basschat can't be seen to endorse breaching other website's terms and conditions. So we'll have to waive all liability regarding where you decide to post your tracks this month!

My own personal opinion would be to:

Make your track private, switch off downloads and share a private link instead of a public one. Then delete the track following the competition, burn your computer and nuke the entire site from orbit: it's the only way to be sure.

Share your track as a Dropbox link.
Worth noting that Dropbox has a copyright infringement policy.
But, for your own personal use, I believe it is ok.

Uploading covers of other people's material without permission is always going to be a headache for some, depending on the tune covered. It seems, some tunes attract attention more than others.
A shame really, but perfectly understandable.

i doubt copyright will be an issue provided you are not trying to sell the music. if its taken down after the comp too then its of little consequence. if someone covered a tune of mine for their own enjoyment i wouldnt take issue with it. if someone was trying to earn from my efforts then i would be a bit more aggravated. i definitely agree that turning downloads off is a good call, and give credit where its due. probably a good idea not to tag basschat on it too as its up to us if we do anything or not.
its sad that people cant just enjoy playing music for the fun of it without worrying about legal issues like this. if someone tells me to remove it then i would without hesitation until then though i wont worry about it. i am not trying to profit from someone elses work, just getting feedback on my playing through a bit of friendly competition.

i think my particular choice is public domain anyway. it is my take on a section of pachelbel's canon in D. i think this may be a different key though, i really dont know. thanks to my current issues i have gone for a bass only rendition and as basic as i could. its a tune i use when i am just idling away with whatever instrument i have handy.

Cheers guys, noted. It's a lot more tricky than I had naively assumed!

Again, I can't recommend any particular platform for this purpose on behalf of Basschat. But personally speaking, I think it would be 'good practice' to:

Switch off downloads

Share as a private link (rather than making the track public)

Credit the songwriter

Include a link to purchase the original - e.g. on iTunes

Delete the track once the challenge has ended
Possibly overkill, given the proliferation of covers online - and that the audience here is likely to be typically small! But the above is what I'll be doing.
