Cheers again Si for organising this. Really enjoyed catching up with everyone I've met previously and meeting some new Basschatters. There was a nice selection of quite different basses as usual - I can't remember who the Dolphin 4 string belonged to but that is a really lovely looking bass!!

It was also great to hear what my basses sound like in the hands of someone who can play well. I hadn't had a chance to play my short scale bass since I built it and to hear it being played (by Lee Man?) properly was really pleasing for me.

The cakes were superb as always - can't go wrong with excellent sponge and lemon cakes!! Thank you very much.

I'd like to say a big thanks to Andy for putting the acoustic bass into the raffle. Well chuffed with this and looking forward to having a play with it later.

For anyone that has not been to a bash before, they are great way to meet folk off the forum, try different kit out and taste some great cakes. I've been to a few of these at different places and everyone has always been very approachable and enthusiastic no matter what their level of experience or the type of kit they have. It's also good to support those that put on these events for us (cheers again Si).

See you at the next one!

Jez

It occurred to me that I had better mention because I know Andy won't. Andy flatly refused to take my petrol money in return for transporting me and my kit from my doorstep and back again. I suggested a charitable cause might benefit and to cut it all short, it went into the BassChat purse to go towards running expenses.

Cheers Andy

Sounds like a good day was had by all. Gutted to have pulled out but unavoidable, I'm afraid. Keep me in the loop for the next one and well done to Si for taking the time and trouble to organise it, I know how much effort these things take to do properly.

Edited for spelling.

I have donated the £49 from the bass raffle and Spondonbassed's kind donation to Basschat as agreed yesterday.

Great afternoon thanks, Si. Was really nice to meet so many new people and try out a couple of basses. Put me down for next year!

The credit for that must go to Andy as I said above but thanks for the mention. Looking forward to the next one.

Very kind of you both, and totally unexpected. Look like a great bash, glad you all had a good time and thanks for the pics.

More pictures of the door hinges please. Are they all original or have they had some work done on them? Will they be there next year? Whats the tone like when you open the cupboard door? ;)

You can see that they're not original - the originals have a serial no stamped on them. These are clearly a Japanese copy - possibly Matsumoku factory from the late 70s - they sound like the originals but with more reverb and a slight digital echo/ delay with the door open.

Big thanks to Si for organising the Midlands Bass bash. It was my first one and I really enjoyed seeing so many nice people, basses and rigs, while drinking coffee and eating cake, what's not to like!

"I can't remember who the Dolphin 4 string belonged to" ... MINE! Bought from Stance of this forum, at the end of last year.

It's weird due to its un-inlayed fretted ebony fingerboard (no mother of pearl dolphins - thankfully, I think they're a bit naff). Stance said he reckoned it was a pro shop special for someone who specially wanted an ebony fingerboard. Conclusion of my fellow bass bashers is that it was built as a fretless .. (there is a little shim under the nut, the frets are not the Warwick "hidden" kind and not bronze either). But whoever did the conversion did a mighty fine job of it as it's perfectly in tune and very easy to play; and why anyone would convert a fretless dolphin to a fretted instead of just trading it .. I don't know.

I have to say that your own basses are pretty special (and unique to boot) .. so any jealousy is in both directions ;¬)

... Oh the joys of meeting other bass nerds :)

Sorry to have completely missed this one :( snot-monster arrived on Friday and I've been reduced to laying on the sofa over the weekend blowing copious amounts of green gunge out of my nose  still, managed to shift through the whole "Line of Duty" DVD boxset......

Next year, well we shall see!

I hope, at least, that it was Trace Elliot green in keeping with the theme of the day...

Get well soon. Catch you next time 'round.

Good work Si on organising a fun afternoon! Lovely to see what a supportive community bass players make. It was great to play Jabba's awesome short scale (my lad was very taken with it) and thanks to the chap with the Mesa, I now have GAS again!

The 'Homage 5' in silver burst was lovely.

I tried something similar at the bash. When Jabba won the raffle I stole my chance and suggested that he could make room in his car for his new acoustic guitar by letting me have that remarkable piezo. I wasn't bothered that it isn't actually finished.

My cunning plan failed.

Dang.

+1 Really lovely basses Jabba_the_gut

The one on the far left was my favourite to play although the short scale one was awesome too.

Great event - thanks for organising again Si!

Those Alembics - just wow!

Talked to many lovely people who generously let me have a go on their treasures.

Just what were those silky smooth flat strings on the various fretless 5s please? GAS.
For the benefit of Marillion Red, Nick A, and others who asked; Jon Shuker has confirmed that the strings on my Shuker Uberhorn fretless 5 are indeed D'Addario chromes. Feel free to release GAS at your chosen string supplier.
