Atelier Z BabyZ PB4

Will consider offers now.

This Japanese built instrument is in excellent near mint condition. It is very easy to play with a narrow fast 30.5" short scale neck. Atelier used to make the Sadowski Japan line and as you would expect shows impeccable workmanship. The fit, finish, neck and fretwork are excellent. The bass is active with pull switch to by-pass to passive.
Atelier call it the BabyZ, which to me doesn’t do it justice.

The original Atelier Gig Bag is included.

Price to buy in Japan is around £725 and shipping is usually about £125.00 making a total of £850. To import it, add VAT of 20% and import duties of another 3% to give you a total of over £1000.00.

I am now asking only £800.00 plus shipping if required. Pickup in person would be best of course.

Manufacturer’s blurb:
Atelier Z have produced the best mini bass on the market in Japan! This packs all the punch of regular Atelier Z basses in a short scale bass so you can get that big professional punchy, clear sound! Ideal for travelling professionals, or those of smaller stature! This little beauty can achieve a great precision bass tone as well as a nice Jazz tone. The rear pick up also sounds great on its own too.

Mike, I can't find a definitive source for dating, e.g. from serial numbers, but this was sold as new in early 2016, so I would hazard that it was made in 2014/15. - update: made in June 2014 according to Atelier.

As for the strap balance, the top strap button aligns with the twelfth fret, so it hangs pretty much conventionally I would say. It sits easily on a shallow diagonal across the body, head higher, which is the way I wear it. It is very similar to my Warwick Corvette short scale that also has the strap button adjacent to the twelfth fret, with the Atelier maybe slightly leaning more down to the left because of the larger head (I'm not talking about neck-dive - there isn't any).

The Scott Whitley short scale (which I believe you have, Mike) has the top strap button way to the right of this and will only sit horizontally, or even head down, which never did suit me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info j-j. Nowadays I'll only play something that's light and correctly balanced - hence my home-made SWB-1 extension bracket (must get round to finishing it in satin black)!

It's also why I sold my 2008 SG Reissue that was otherwise probably the best bass I've ever had.

Well, Mike, that's a wicked improv. with the SWB-1. A guitarist friend of mine suggested something similar for mine, but not as fancy as yours. In the end I sold mine rather than add to it. I can see that you would have the same issue with the SG. Also if you won the lottery and was considering an Alembic, it would seem to be the same.

BTW, Atelier got back to me with a date - the BabyZ was made June 2014. I'll update the sale page.

Thanks for info jaccjazz - love the Atelier but more than I want to spend (not saying isn't worth it!!). Glad you like my SWB-1 mod - the challenge was to make something that would fix using the existing strap-button screw hole and not mark the finish.

Absolutely love this bass but realistically more than I can spend too

Love scrumpymike's mod too - would love something like this for an Alembic Brown Bass if anybody has far better design and fabrication skills than myself!

Bump - rare and desirable

Hi, I play shortscale, and I'm warming to this instrument, been watching youtube reviews, etc, so as you have found out the manufacturing date I'm assuming you bought it pre-owned, do you know how many owners it's had, and what makes you sell it so soon ?

MWH:
Why am I selling it? - I need the money (I won't bore you with the details) and this is the best bass I have. So hoping it is therefore worth the most. If it doesn't sell, I'll be moving down to try the next one.
Pre-owned? - Well sort of, but not quite. It was a trade show instrument and had no other owners apart from the Japanese retailers. This might also explain its unique feature, namely the marble effect scratch plate. My assumption is that this was a special produced for the trade show, something a lot of manufacturers seem to do. Almost all the Atelier Z Baby Z basses I've seen have clear plastic scratch plates. I think this one looks much cooler.

Gunsfreddy2003: Yes, the quality of workmanship is superb. Nice range of sounds too, with the P-J pickups, active electronics, and the passive switch.

There's no doubt that these are fantastic s-s basses. It was a toss-up for me between this one and spending 50% more on a custom Maruszczyk. Unfortunately for jaccjazz and my bank balance (but luckily for whoever gets this one), the M custom won.

Atelier Z are amazing basses, it's a shame that they are not quite so well known as they should be - the bass players in Chic and Incognito use them permanently so gives you an idea of just how good they are.

Cannot agree more, mate. I have imported one from Japan (a Jino 4 in olympic white with abalone blocks and traditional binding) a couple of years ago and I absolutely love it. Like with all Jap basses, the attention to detail is spectacular.
