Don Nobles? I work in Louth, great town, great people.

If that was the only bookies in Louth in 1966, it must have been.

I've just had a butchers on Google Earth and Aswell St. does look right.

It was cold, hissing down and the journey back to south Bucks in a Bedford CA van was long and miserable.

Happy Daze. :P

I went there for the first time last April. Skegness itself is a bit scummy. But only a short walk down the coast and you have beautiful deserted beaches, sand dunes, wildlife parks, all sorts of birds.

I really loved it. It's great if you like tramping along windswept beaches, listening to birds and watching clouds scudding overhead. But I suppose it might be a bit grim if it was pouring with rain.

I only ask because we're opening for Morland & Arbuckle a national act that does that Delta and Mississippi Hill Country blues stuff this weekend.

I noticed they have a gig coming up at the Great British Rock and Blues Festival in Skegness, UK.

Should be a fun gig, sound, lights and back line provided. We only have to play an hour set. I'll be home early for a change.

I've played that festival - headlining the smaller stage (Jaks) on the Friday night in 2013

It's a good event, nowhere near as grim as some of the other holiday camps I've played...!

Ok guys, most know I'm a Yankee. What is a holiday camp?

An holiday camp is very much like those big prisons ran by sheriffs that are popular in the USA where they make the prisoners wear pink, sleep in cramped quarters and work for nothing. Except you get more alcohol and sex in prison and the other people aren't as annoying as holiday camp goers.
On the bright side the sentence is usually restricted to 2 weeks at most and the chance of getting shanked is slightly less too.

When I was in Rochester, NY, my guide Marie pointed out the canal. I never knew the US had canals for the same purpose we did (transportation of goods before road transport got popular). She knew this would surprise me. In much the same way, I've been racking my brains trying to think if I have ever heard of an american equivalent of the holiday camp and I cant think of one. After WW2 few people here had cars, and so the holiday camp you could reach by train in a couple of hours from pretty much anywhere was a good idea. I suspect there is no direct equivalent largely due to geography and more distributed populations in the US. It was all a bit second rate, but still better than the factory

I worked at Butlins in Skegness for 5 years during the 2000's.

I was a sound engineer then head of all AV for the whole resort. It is a fascinating place, has a lot of history dating back to when it opened in the 1930s. Skegness itself is rammed during the summer, and then a ghost town in winter. It is miles away from any major towns, so can feel like a bit of an island at times.

When I was there, Butlins spent a lot of money on sound gear for the main venues, and the blues festival used to be one of my favourites to do as they used to provide backline that they insisted everyone shared which speeded up the band turnarounds (only a 15min gap between each) and made soundchecking a lot easier. I don't know if it is still run like that now.

I got to meet and work with Noel Redding just before he died, which was a massive tick in the book for me. He was very frail at the time as I remember.

They are not the greatest payers, so whether you get a good sound person can be a bit of a lottery. It is a fantastic training ground for up and comers though, as you get to learn that the show must always go on, and how to fix some weird faults.

I tend to look back on it with rosy coloured glasses now - I remember feeling honoured to work on some fantastic gigs with some amazing personal heroes/musicians (I include the house bands in that too chardbass ;-)) - but then start to remember all the kids gameshows, wrestling matches, crap internal productions etc that I also had to sit through too....

I had that poster on my chalet/caravan wall during my time there. It was originally part of a calendar in the early 90's, but they re-released it as a poster in the mag one month and it caused quite a stir in the town.

I thought no one could have said it any better!

Seriously though, after about 3 1/2 years, I moved offsite and rented locally and got a bit more involved in the local community - I quite enjoyed Skeg after that. I left to find my fame and fortune in London...and I'm still looking....

I played a biker rally at Pontins at Southport in December once (The Rally In The Chalet)!

The main hall was ok, just full of drunk bikers, but the rest of the company was something else. You can just about imagine what type of people who would go to an old holiday camp in northern England in December - like something out of the night of the living dead...!

I played at the Butlins at minehead at few years ago. That was quite enjoyable.

My nan used to live in Lincolnshire. It was cold even in the summer, winter it was like Siberia. Mainly because that's where the wind blew from 😊.

The main problem with Skegness is the lack of motorway there.

I last went to Skegness in about 1982 where I won 2nd? prize in a Dad and his Lad competition - a novelty soap shaped like a foaming tankard of ale and some chocolate. That week the monorail broke down and a few dozen people were stuck for several hours in mid-air.
Happy times!!
