Kevin Dean Posted September 17, 2016 Share Posted September 17, 2016 I'm thinking about taking the speaker out of one of my Barefaced super compacts & trying it in a Ashdown cab with a tweeter , to see what its like . they have the same 8 ohms & the barefaced has twice the watts . Swapping speakers might improve the sound of the Ashdown (also might not) but it won't sound half as good as the SC, because they were designed to work together. Why isn't your Super Compact enough? Beer of the Bass Posted September 17, 2016 Share Posted September 17, 2016 There are situations where the wrong cabinet can drastically reduce the power handling of even a high-excursion driver like Barefaced use. Without being familiar with the size and port tuning of both cabs I don't know if that would be the case here, but it's something to bear in mind. Phil Starr Posted September 17, 2016 Share Posted September 17, 2016 If you are just messing around, a quick swap just out of curiosity there'd be no harm in a few minutes at home and with the volume down to reasonable levels but as has been said the mis-matched cab could result in your driver only being able to handle 100watts. Playing at home on your own would also mean a fair chance of hearing any odd noises indicating damage setting in. Frankly if you do it on stage all bets are off unless you have done the calculations. [/quote] Ampeg 410 HLF great cab and very happy, although did a small gig last night with just the Mackie Thump 18" and the PA tops (RCF 312a's) into the desk via my DHA pre amp pedal and it sounded great so a lot less to carry to the gig (SVT & 410 less!). [/quote] This is a common problem for mountain bikers (where injuries are a lot more common than in bass playing). Big crash = accidental new bike purchase! Even the best of us have stuck a screwdriver through a speaker cone. If you do this I recommend lots of swearing followed by a call to the recone man.
