Phil Jones Repair

Hi all,

My Phil Jones Suitcase is not sounding quite right, as if one of the drivers is clipping or working too hard.

I have been in touch with Synergy Distribution in Birmingham who do repairs but it would have to be couriered there and back from Scotland and the Suitcase isn't exactly light.

Does anyone know of a Phil Jones repair centre closer to Scotland?

Cheers!

Just noticed this post. I know... I should log in more often but life gets in the way.

Am in a similar situation with my Breifcase which has started playing up after about ten years of utter reliability.

Did you find anyone closer? My local tech in Hamilton has identified possible strategies for repair but as the fault on mine is intermittent, there are no guarantees so it seems I'll be sending it down to Synergy. Certain fairly well known valve amp builders in Glasgow were worse than useless.

Cheers

Ed

Sadly not Ed, my Suitcase is currently down with Synergy. Luckily my parents were driving down that way so it was dropped off. Not so sure how am I getting it back yet, I see an slightly expensive courier in order.

I did think about taking it to another amp tech nearer but since I feared it might be a blown or damaged driver I wanted to send it somewhere where they know their Phil Jones products

What is the issue with yours? If it helps from what I told them over the phone they said it could be something as simple as dried out capacitors although I haven't had this confirmed to me yet...

Cheers

My trusty Briefcase is going into "protection" mode - that is it shuts itself down. Could be power transistors, main board fault- any number of obscure things.

The tech I asked to fix it has been in touch with a guy from Phil Jones in the states but the outcome of that has not been satisfactory as far as I am concerned, leaving me with a list of possible fixes at may expense, none of which are guaranteed to be successful.

Alan at Synergy tells me that they will stand by the product and their guy knows the ins and outs of the amp so he wants to get it right for me. I see that as my best option so I'm going to send it down to them next week.

As electronics get more and more sophisticated and specialised, I suspect that this is what we will have to put up with for the future.

Keep me posted as to your outcome and I'll do likewise.

Cheers

Ed

So...it appears I have damaged all 4 of the drivers  Not really sure how but that's the case. Synergy are waiting on replacements to come in from the US.

Hopefully I get a fully functioning amp back soon and fingers crossed the repair bill doesn't make me :(

Update on this: Amp has been down with Alan at Synergy in Birmingham. Faultless customer service. Alan is only charging me for the parts (at a very, very reasonable rate) and is covering the shipping back to me.

Best customer service I've had in a long time. If you ever have a fault with any Phil Jones, contact Synergy Distribution and I'm sure they'll help you out.

Excited to have my amp back to see how it sounds!

Hi

I purchased a BG 400 from a well known on line supplier in 2017 .  An outstanding amp however after a number of months while gigging  ie used continuously on stage or rehearsal room it would start clipping / cutting out for a few seconds  . Both channels with limiter on and limiter off . With and without the C8 extension cab . Electrical power , leads etc all normal .  I sent it back under guarantee . They service partner could not replicate the fault . I should add that the fault is not replicated

I contacted my amp tech and he and was somewhat taken back that it is a known fault as highlighted by this reputable forum . The problems is the sophisticated Power supply unit which when heated through use triggers this glitch . Its a very straightforward fix by replacing the power control module in its entirety .

Good luck.

Ref your earlier post about response from Phil Jones themselves. When I bought my M500 and 8b a few years ago, I got some great advice from PJB most of it from the man himself. Recently I wanted to buy a new amp and a couple of speakers so I emailed a number of times about queries on specs all of which went un answered.  I really like their stuff so I ordered blind. Hopefully all will work out ok.
