Buddy was the greatest. I say if you can't deal with him , then quit.Or better yet don't join,

These guy know what they're signing up for when they played with Buddy.

I'm with you Blue.
It's the Buddy Rich Band. It's a different level of demand and expectation entirely, I'd be expecting perfection if I'd seen them play. Anything less would be average. There's a million average bands out there.
He'd more than paid his dues by that point and deserved to not feel like a fool on stage.
If I was in his band and I knew I hadn't dropped any clams then I wouldn't take any of that abuse personally at all. If I had messed up through not working at it hard enough, and especially at that level, then it's a fair call in my opinion.

Yes. By chance yesterday I was listening to a 1957 vinyl recording of Ella singing Duke's songbook with Ellington's bands in various guises led by the man himself. It is sublime on all fronts, check it out !

The only errors I hear stand out on Concert for the Americas were Buddy's, I'm afraid - though they're not clangers. That is also a masterpiece, for different reasons. I trust BR suitably self-flagellated  ;)

Interestingly, if one listens to the earliest recordings of Buddy as a 'child prodigy' similar slips are there.....

Cool

Buddy was a bad ass, some don't like these types, I do.

Would love to play in that league and be driven by someone like Buddy.

Clams annoy me to. But I hit as many if not more than anyone else in my band.

The tape only motivated me to practice more.

Good for you. It motivated me to thank my lucky stars that I've never had to work with a tyrant.

I wonder if many of the responses are from millenials and there's a generational thing.

I understand millenials don't like criticism.

I'm the same age as you. What's a millenial by the way?

Millenials don't like racism or homophobia either ;)

That's one way to put it Blue. Another would be that society has progressed quite a bit in the last half century in some areas. As stated previously in the thread, a more progressive and positive method works well when trying to get results from people.
Of course, as with all things human nature, it's about balance. Criticism is essential, but there are positive ways to present it.
We get it Blue, it's an age thing. As a result you know best, you've been there, down that, seen it all, got the t-shirt. Everyone else's opinion must be wrong. Now could you please stop making the same old argument ad nauseam.

I don't think that's what's going on in this thread, but if that helps you feel validated then have at it. I get the impression most basschatters are a little older than the usual definition of millennial, and certainly several of the posters making pertinent points in this thread are older. Myself, I was born at the start of the 80s so probably just about fit in the millennial bracket, but I'm willing to avoid the cliches about boomers if you'll do the same about us...
I don't hear a lot of coherent musical criticism in Buddy's rants, more non-specific impotent rage. More targeted criticism would make it clear exactly what parts of the set needed work, but I don't think that's what he was going for. To me the tape sounded like an insecure individual attempting to establish a pecking order, and nothing to do with the quality of the performances. He's not whipping them into shape, but beating them down for his own satisfaction. If more people are more inclined to question that kind of behaviour now, I'm happy about that.

I'm older than Blue. I'm not going to even listen to the clip, as, whatever the circumstances, the vocabulary used is not that which I'm prepared to support. If the bloke has no better than that to proffer, I'd suggest putting down his sticks for a while and getting a more complete education. It's not a question of music, nor passion, but of behaving as a human, especially towards others, whoever they are. Bad manners does not excuse bad manners. The bloke shows himself as an oaf. and an ignoramus. A real shame, as he did have some qualities.

I can remember 'managers' like this.

They were totally ineffective and only got away with it because they'd shout anyone down who challenged their stupidity.

You do not get the best out of people by bullying and threatening them and any manager today who thinks this sort of behaviour is in any way effective or productive is liable to be an ex-manager or filing for bankruptcy in the not too distant future.
BHS are already there and Sports Direct getting there won't be a massive surprise.

A managers inate 'ability' is immaterial, if they can't attract and retain talented people then they are left managing nothing.

Tricky one. All those years in the biz and at the time being 60 + its surprising at how immature his rant appears to be given that he must have been used to the ups and downs of touring etc. 80s management style doesn't cut it when we listen to it now. He did have a name and reputation to protect going out as the Buddy Rich Big Band - hes the one that would get stick if it sounded bad so he would have a lot invested in the perfromance. That said, you reach a certain point in life where hopefully a bit of perspective would prevent one from such a tirade. Charm and persuasion are more useful motivators to most. Some people do need a kick in the pants though.

In answer to the thread question - yes, i care but not enough to alienate my band-mates. I've learned to live with their foibles as i am sure they have learned to live with mine.

Understood. My point wasn't really about censorship as such, t'was more about one member asking another member to stop posting stuff, hence my 'back seat moderation' comment. I entirely understand that mods/admins may need to step in sometimes but I don't think us ordinary members should take it upon ourselves to do so, which is really what I meant by 'censorship' but can now see that it was probably the wrong word in that context. Apologies for any confusion.
