Got to say huge thanks to Mert & WalMan for helping to plan it and make it happen on the day!! A lot of people said to me they thought the venue was really good and that's all down to Merton for getting it sorted, so well done Mert! Really must thank the Holiday Inn as well because the two rooms were excellent and the hire fee was 'minimal' considering the quality of the rooms and that's because our event was for charity! Big, big thanks to Adrian Ashton, Joe White, Alex Claber, John East (with Michael on bass) and Bernie Goodfellow (with Russ & Deborah) for giving us their time and expertise - everybody was superb! Can't forget OBBM for helping to get John East & Adrian on board and also JohnnyLager for doing the same with Bernie and also for helping get the rooms set-up in the morning, so thanks guys! I didn't see anywhere near enough gear because of running around like a headless chicken most of the day but there was some really fantastic stuff in the room!!! Dougal's collection of basses were lovely, as was CK's pre Ernie Ball Stingray and Mert's Status and WalMan's Wal and G&L.. Best of all was everybody turning up and making it happen.. Nice photos by the way CK and thanks for appointing Sylas as honorary photographer on the day (he did a good job too). As the guys did at the Yorkshire Bash in summer, we decided on the day to run the Jazz Bass raffle here on the Forum for another week as we feel we could raise a bit more that way.. And when I've worked out all the maths, I'll let everyone know what has been raised. Thanks to everybody for their donation of prizes and for buying the raffle tickets.. See you at the next one! NowVertical Posted September 28, 2008 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Only managed to stay a couple of hours but enjoyed trying as many basses as I could. Luckily for me instead of more GAS it has made me feel even happier with my GB Rumour 5 (picked up two months ago). That is not to say there were not some fantastic basses there with some unique tones but I was content that the range of tones and playability from my rumour more than made made up for that occasional tone that it can not quite nail. However, I sort of feel that the rumour is capable of more it is just I have not quite worked out how to get the sound out with my fingers yet - 2 months is too short a period of time to really get to know a bass...for instance it took me about 9 months before I started to fully understand and love my old KSD 5 60's Jazz. Actually I lie...I did love trying Crazykiwi's Smith BSR5-GN fretless, incredibly playable and an incredible range of tones. It has made me reconsider defretting the KSD and instead selling it to put towards the cost of...well maybe a smith. Thanks to Nik & Martin (I'll see if I can spot your better half in the audience at my GrooveSonic gig tonight @ The Priory Bar and Cafe, Reigate) really appreciated the effort you went too. Sad I missed the other talks because I was too carried away seeing how my cabs worked with the multitude of amps there - yes, that rumble coming through the wall was probably my fault - but I had a fantastic time and am thrilled that my own ramblings were of use, it's bit different to talking to an audience than playing a load of BritSkunk(tm) at them! Everyone was so cool, but we are bass players, what do you expect? (Can you imagine it working as well with drummers, guitarists, or heaven forbid - singers!!?) Alex P.S. CK - am attempting to defeat my Shuttle GAS - fortunately have just listened to a new gig recording where my tone was pretty damn righteous - but it's soooo small and cute and loud and fat, etc etc etc... Right another new bass (G&L, GB, Vigier,...) as the new one is nearly a month old and needs a polish, or a new amp (EBS, Genz, Alien, Avalon, Ampeg...) with Claber's cabs? ped Posted September 28, 2008 Share Posted September 28, 2008 I had a fantastic day. the next bash has a lot to live up to!! The venue was excellent, great idea to have two rooms. Really nice catching up with some regulars and meeting lots of new faces (both new and old). Thanks to Kiwi for bringing me along and to my girlfriend for lending me her 106 for the day. I just about returned it in one piece. Some highlights for me - very impressed with the two 10" BFM cabs and the new Hartke head brought along by andyonbass- simple setup with a great sound. Also cool to see Urb demonstrate the amazing looper pedal. I went to buy one today but fortunately the shop was closed so I have saved some money! It was a pleasure to watch Mr. East share some of his amazing knowledge with us with the help (and fantastic playing) of his handsome assistant (sorry, forgotten the name!) Simply a fantastic day with some fantastic people for a fantastic cause. Thanks to everyone involved in setting it all up, and everyone who came and made it a great day. It got lost between the room & my car as I was coerced into playing a couple of celinders before I left by CrazyKiwi. For those who care, I'm the copper top in the 'okemo' top.
