Those examples are all very expensive because they all cost lots of money. :rolleyes:

An old mass-produced bass didn't cost lots of money, it cost a relatively trivial amount which most of us here could have afforded when new. It's now worth a lot more for reasons of rarity and - dare I say it - Mojo.

How much more?

I could make a pretty decent case for £4000, a rather weaker case for £6000, and a really week kite-flyer for £10,000.

Above that and you're away with the fairies.

IMHO of course.

I'm guessing that, if Roger Daltrey happened to find a 'stack knob' laying about in the basement of one of his homes 'Pino' would get it? Didn't Guy Pratt acquire his stack knob after coverting one from a famous colleague? I know nothing about Pino's personal guitar collection, but I'm assuming that he must have people throwing guitars at him left, right and centre?

I couldn't find one either. Lots and lots of pictures of him playing pretty much every mainstream bass you could possibly think of, EXCEPT for a stack-knob Jazz!

Sort of, though as we all know cost often bears little relation to price. You're right the value has increased because of rarity - exactly the same for a Carribean island, after all they didn't 'cost' anything did they, they were just 'lying around' ;)

Anyway, it's not really worth more because of rarity, it's because of desirability. I could make a bass and it would be far rarer that the one in question because it would be the only one of it's kind in the entire universe, but that alone wouldn't make it desirable.

But my basic point was that some people have so much money that they could buy something like this on a whim, whereas we're all agonising over whether it's worth this or that and trying to come up with a well-reasoned justification. A £16k price tag is not aimed at people like us.

Good grief - that's what you call distressed finish! Hardware looks pretty good though.

I noticed even the stack knob Jazz Fullerton reissues from the early 80s have a higher price - one at Andy Baxter for £2750 currently.

Of course a bass that has belonged to a celebrity is going to have premium price tag, just like a silk hanky that belonged to Elvis, or a dress that belonged to Priness Diana, etc etc, there's a whole industry selling this stuff and a bass guitar is no different, and it's worth is what someone is prepared to pay, if is worth that much someone somewhere will pay, if is not, they won't........

Agreed that an instrument owned by a famous player is likely to fetch more. However, I would assume like in comparable situations (e.g. sports memorabilia) that how much more depends on the provenance (e.g. was the bass used on any recordings and live) and the authenticity of an item.

Makes me wonder how this works in cases where there are no photos, or stories about the provenance of an item in the public domain. Proof of previous ownership is one thing but I would have thought its to a large extent the use of a bass that determines the value. I reckon people that consider dropping that kind of money will call the shop and inquire about the detailed history. For 16k it should have been used on SEMINAL Pino recordings....;-)
