Which bass(es) do you like to gig with?

I always have my Alembic fretted and fretless 5s. They were custom builds, fit my hands perfectly and are a joy to play. No point in owning them if I don't take them out. I sometimes take the NS5 upright if we're doing a bit of ceilidh just to ring the changes. The rest of my harem live in different rooms of the house so I can pick an instrument up whenever I feel the need.

First port of call is usually the 1979 Musicman Sabre that I've gigged with since 1993. It's like a pair of comfortable old shoes to me.

I've been needing a 5 string a lot more for some of the numbers we play and I bought a fretless Stingray 5 Hp last year to fill that gap. I've been experimenting with using that for the whole gig to save swapping about and it's working well.

My basses are set out below. For almost all the gigs I used to do with the function band it would be the Mk 1 Custom Series Wal and the Pro series Wal - which would swap between across the set. When the Pro got a bit delicate and needed TLC then the FrankenJazz joined the Custom Series Wal.

However, I there was a gig where, for some reason I couldn't be bothered to take two I would almost always be the Mk 1 Custom Wal.

My golden rule is in general basses get gigged, if they don't they go. One exception is my fretless 5er that I'm still learning to play to a standard where I can inflict it on others.
