IMO anyone who can come up with music like this can look as pleased and arrogant as he likes.

I love Jonathan Maron's playing, so smooth. He's like a modern-day Bob Babbitt but with Latin chops. He's got the skills and just sits in the pocket regardless, one of the best groove players I've ever heard, smokes everybody I've heard from the UK tbh.

Johann Asmundsson imo is such a fantastic bass player. Ive always love Mezzoforte. I bought the live in Reykjvik DVD and i was blown away. great playing on that Sadowsky, but when the drummer plays his bass with his sticks. i was like.! well thats something i dont see in a band very often. Great tasteful slap playing the man anyways. Check his solo slap playing @ 2.20 followed by the great drummer Gunni Briem playing his bass on the sticks. Check out also a certain percussionist from early Incognito.

Yeah, it's a groove and it's really cool.

Not hard to do when your ;

1. With very talented musicians
2. Your not completely driven and restricted to only the genre you personally like.

I think many forget how important flexibility is in this business. If your not flexible, I say enjoy that bedroom. Because that's probably going to be where your most comfortable.

Truth.
Bottom line - this groove is great...but isn't difficult in the grand scheme of things. These guys live on playing that kind of stuff, so it's second nature to them.
Anyone who finds what I've just said controversial or offensive - or indeed, has taken offence at anything Blue has said - simply needs to grow the fk up; musically and otherwise.

It's not about true or false, it is about how and when things are said. As an analogy, if your girlfriend cooks you a great dinner, do you compliment her, or just go: oh that's easy. You just bought some ingredients in a regular shop, and followed a recipe. And besides, you have done it before. Big deal. Although true, might not work wonders for the relationship.
And back OT: Great musicianship and a catching groove!

Ive seen them live twice. and he didn't come across like that at all for me. I'm not saying he can't be Bassnut. I saw them at the cheltenham jazz fest and after they all went to a bar across the road and i got talking to him.he even bought me a drink, he came across as very level headed to me. believe me i can recognise some unbalance in a personality when i meet them .. i found Cory Henry, who was the organ player that night quite arrogant. but I was thinking, you just don't know what is going on in these peoples lives. He might of been knackered, pissed. who knows.
No, I didn't get to meet him personally and good to hear from a couple of people that he's a sound muso bloke. I just felt he didn't come across all that well on stage, at least not on the nights I saw the puppies play; but he's defo a great player none the less. Maybe I am just too cynical or English, but his over-abundant enthusiasm didn't seem that real to me......I'll get my coat!

Those layers sound like something done on a looper. Nice groove though.
I think League's enthusiasm is genuine, he just really digs doing that stuff. He always comes across as being incredibly humble too. Often the case with true musicians, especially in jazz circles, I've found.

Very much like my original comment about these guys.

Talking of Fela Kuti, I went to see his ex-drummer, Tony Allen, once. He was touring with his own band. The audience was made up of about 80% people dancing like crazy fools, and about 20% every single drummer in town, standing with their mouths hanging open and expressions of awe and confusion on their faces. Everything he does seems simple but he creates this huge, driving groove using completely different rhythms to anyone coming out of a rock tradition.

A few years ago we went to see the Fela Kuti show in at Sadler's Wells, 3 times. On the last time Femi got up and did a couple of numbers at the end. We thought the cast was good but Femi just blew them away.

My first experience of Afrobeat. Those nights were some of the best music I've heard in decades.

Anyone been watching 'Better Call Saul' on Netflix (a spin off from Breaking Bad)? The outro theme music has a nifty little groove to it . . .

Snarky Puppy's Family Dinner Vol 1 is really a sublime record, and though Something ft Lalah Hathaway got them their grammy and is arguably their most well known song from the album, all the other tracks on the album are just as good! A particular personal favourite is this song featuring Magda Giannikou

Thanks for Fela Kuti/Afro Beat/Snarky Puppy recommendations - lots to check out.

I found a Snarky Puppy Dunlop Sessions gig on YouTube that I love but can't find anything similar on record - anyone point me in the right direction? (Back to the original clip) With reference to Jonathon Maron, does anyone know what the line is he's playing at 6:35 on this Aguilar demo (his playing throughout is excellent, IMO).. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1exrD10v4mg

Cheers!

Purchased from Amazon (and it's a CD/DVD to boot..)

Their last strict studio album was 8 years ago, so everything since 2008 is a CD/DVD combo! The DVD's are GREAT watching lots of good angles to see how each player plays, what gear they use etc.

Hmmm. My favourite music style is funk. These guys can lay down a tight groove, that's for sure. However, for me, I was waiting for the piece to develop a bit more - to go somewhere else and come back again. Maybe I'm too used to listening to and playing pop-funk, but I found myself listening for the hook in that video. After a while, I found myself thinking: - Yes, that great. What happens now, then?

Lots of Meters in there.
