You can put regular E A D G strings on, if you can find ones that are long enough, especially the bottom E. (Some day I'll figure out how to embed photos in my posts!)

Oh my...I like that - it makes my Dingwall 4 look like a short scale :D

I'd think (though I'm not positive) that Dingwall strings might fit? Or Payson? A ping to Sheldon would answer that one. Alternatively, the chaps at Newtone Strings could probably knock some up?

Lovely bass, Neil. Thanks for the influences. <3

+1 to that. I remember seeing you with Whitesnake at the Hammersmith Odeon (as was) in about 1979/1980 and just loved your playing. Thanks, Neil. Oh, and
GLWTS! 😊

That's massive! :D

Out of interest, why spec such a length? How is the stretch to the first position?
[/quote]

It's the same as on Dingwall basses. The point of different lengths for each string, and particularly a longer B string, is to have each string at a more similar tension, and the B string gives a deeper fundamental when it's longer. It's a bit of a stretch, depending on the length of your fingers, though for me having a narrower neck because it's a 4-string helps a lot. Bear in mind that a double bass is still a longer scale length than that.

The Dingwall only goes to 37", so this is why I asked. I understand fanned frets! :) inwas just curious about the subtle but presumably meaningful change in range compared to the Dingers.

I never noticed any difference between my Dingwall Prima 5 and this Sei, as regards the (supposed) extra quarter inch - I just took the scale length from the original spec. sheet that Martin Petersen did - I actually think it's probably identical to a Dingwall. There would be more effect of the woods, pickups, EQ etc, in my opinion, but because of my playing style, I don't hear subtle tonal variations between high end basses - your mileage may vary!
