I used to go to the occassional gigs myself back in 80's thru choice rather than circumstances. It was ok but something good about having a few beers and chatting with a mate(s) is all part of the experience. I don't count bandmates as friends mainly because we don't socialise other than as a band. I do tend to socialise with my brother more than anyone else and even go to occassional gigs. Monkey Steve Posted June 6, 2019 Share Posted June 6, 2019 You could try something like a MeetUp group https://www.meetup.com The idea is that they are for people who want to go to stuff but don't want to go on their own if none of their other mates want to go, or if you're new to an area and don't have a lot of friends there yet, whether it's gigs/cinema/dog walking/S&M clubs/whatever. far more choice in big cities so it does depend a bit on your location I know them from mates who have been members - I met one of my (now) very best mates about a decade ago because a friend of mine who was giving me a lift to Download had joined the Rock MeetUp group to find people he could camp with (because I won't camp) and had offered to give her a lift up too. I know The listing says Slayer are on at 8.45 and Tool don't start until 9.25 so a bit of both, but I'll see how good or bad Slayer are before making a final decision on who to see during the overlap. At a gig, I want to really enjoy the music and performance up close and personal. Heading abroad for gigs is great fun too. Last year I combined a five-day run of gigs - Reef / Voivod / Lygo /Killing Joke / Therapy? with a nice break in Hamburg. Explore the city during the day, head to the gig at night. It’s paradise. You tend to get talking to people doing these things and it’s great to meet new people from different cultures. When I head to Frankfurt for Triumph of Death / Yob / The Obsessed jaunt in a couple of weeks, a mate of mine who lives in Colchester is going to meet me over there which should be great craic Three days, three cities, three gigs, but I would have headed over solo if no-one else had volunteered to come along. It's a very tough call to be approachable in a room full of strangers. Having said that gigs can be a great place to meet folk; I have many good a genuine friends that were once strangers at gigs. If you're in the North West I'd be happy to meet up for a gig to break your cycle, my shifts at work permitting. To get back on topic. Just booked for Homemade Sin ( had an ex who was big into Georgia Satellites, which kinda obliged me to be as well). John Coghlan's Quo in August, Blockheads in Oct (I think).
