A symphony in miniature, a genuine fully-fledged composition taking us on a staged journey towards a goal. If there is a leitmotiv theme, it is the use of the bass as principal melodic voice. Subtle evolution from style to style, without falling into any generic trap or cliché. We are easily drawn in, beguiled by the very competent execution of all instruments, and excellent arrangement given full value by clean production and mixing. The Challenge is to compose for the picture in less than 5 minutes; this succeeds in every respect, even to the point of assuming some aspects of an epic 'cycle'. A real pleasure to listen to; highly enjoyable.

A gentle ride through late autumn sunshine, with some interesting little detours around the principal route. We occasionally lose our way, and there are a few soft jolts and bumps along the way, but our enjoyment remains untarnished. The pace quickens on a downward slope, but control is maintained and the threatened lively clip is adroitly kept in check. It's slightly disconcerting to have so much going on; despite the sparse instrumentation there is constant variation and impromptu departure to distract us, meandering through untried byways both in the foreground and beyond. Happily we are brought back on track before the piece calmly goes its way over the horizon, warbling away into the distant haze. Another fine piece, then, quite fitting to the pic if one uses a modicum of imagination. Just as a high-wire artist keeps us enthralled, the slight wobbles make us gasp, but we heave a sigh of relief and applaud just the same.

An anecdote..? OK, but a short(ish...) one, for a change. Decades ago, late at night I would listen to 'Saiing By', the Shipping Forecast music well known to R4 listeners. It has been re-recorded since, but back then, I would, each and every time, fall into the very same trap of hearing the first few notes in 4/4 time, and would be brought up short when the (flagrant..!) ¾ imposed itself. I don't get this same effect from the current version, and sometimes 'force' myself to hear the trickery again. It's subtle, and was an enjoyable 'mind game' back then (before television...). Why do I bore you all with this..? Here we have a similar feat. I'm gently soothed by the rocking 6/8 dreaminess of this piece, with its neat 'swing' and lyrical chirruping, and even accept naively the insistent bass line joining in, but am brutally brought back to modernity when the thudding 'disco' pounding starts, and completely switches the accentuation. This journey starts with much promise, but the mechanical future portrayed has foreboding menace; I'd turn back, frankly. A well executed work, taking us from light to dark almost seamlessly; that's the frightening part. Urrrrhh; I'm still shivering, it's that good.

A cheery, jaunty spin guaranteed to bring on a smile. Freshly sparse at the outset, the theme patters on whilst variants enter each in turn and demonstrate to us the versatility of the tune. We are offered a vision of several horizons, ever more exotic, until the reverie ends, and we alight, gently, back on our feet, toes still tapping. Executed with a 'homely' attitude, there is little attempt at sheer virtuosity, and the piece is lifted all the higher by the roguish humour offered. Fairly short, too, leaving us humming the ditty in similar fashion to the ending of 'The Life Of Brian'. A 'sunny side up' view of the picture.

An odd piece; very short, and rather minimalist in its production. There's a buried drum track struggling to not become a broken metronome giving an uneven background to a couple of repeating bass lines, over which the echoing guitar riffs meander and fold, never quite settled. I get an impression of a musical journey fashioned as 'Ground Hog Day', with eternal potential beginnings, each condemned to be curtailed, overtaken by its successor. Short, raw, eager; the jaunt gives no sense of progression. The cyclist in the picture is condemned to be forever hesitating, advancing one foot forward, only to then take one step back. A good start; requires development.

Douglas , the picture inspired me to write a tune about where my daughter went to in her head , to hear you describe it as such is perfect , thank you so much , while the tune might not be be the daughters idea of her own mind , If i could wish 'cheery and guaranteed to bring on a smile' to her own psyche , that would be it, you understand this music stuff don't you :D

Disclaimer: My apologies in advance to the composer, as parts of this may come across as unduly harsh. I have respect for his work, and these are merely my idle thoughts on this particular piece, unfortunately coloured by an uncomfortable coincidence.
As an insect or lobster, this piece is structured with an exoskeletal arpeggio which masks a softer, more complex interior, however, to the detriment of the latter. There is much detail introduced throughout the voyage but, also as an insect, we are unable to swat away the insistent 5/4. Luckily, we learn from Wikipedia that the substance from which such a shell is made (see *...) is also that of the scales of a butterfly's wing, giving shine, brilliance and iridescence when viewed in a good light. Once one chooses to ignore the botheration, there are fine jewels in there. No qualms with the execution, nor the production in general, but some reservations as to the mixing.

Chitin (C8H13O5N)n (/ˈkaɪtɨn/ ky-tin) is a long-chain polymer of a N-acetylglucosamine, a derivative of glucose, and is found in many places throughout the natural world. It is a characteristic component of the cell walls of fungi, the exoskeletons of arthropods such as crustaceans (e.g., crabs, lobsters and shrimps) and insects, the radulae of molluscs, and the beaks and internal shells of cephalopods, including squid and octopuses. The structure of chitin is comparable to the polysaccharide cellulose, forming crystalline nanofibrils or whiskers. In terms of function, it may be compared to the protein keratin. Chitin has also proven useful for several medical and industrial purposes. In butterfly wing scales, chitin is often organized into stacks of nano-layers or nano-sticks made of chitin nanocrystals that produce various iridescent colors by thin-film interference: similar, analogous structures made of keratin are found in iridescent bird plumage.

Glad to see you're back in top form again Dad ! :)
The composer agrees with all the above. The whole piece was a battle from start to finish !! I wanted to try something different to my usual guitar/vocal efforts, but ended in a deep hole upside down !! :scratch_one-s_head:

Phew..! I was afraid that this would be interpreted as an undeserved 'panning', especially when I discovered what crab shell is made of..! :o Any chance of a remixed version..? I'd like to hear the underlying parts a bit better (and my hearing, or lack thereof, doesn't help, of course..! )..?

A cool, low-key rap over lo-fi drum'n'bass, accompanied by divers and moult glitches and scratches, which evolve into a very credible 'funk'. Straight-face, straight lace, no disgrace, the perfect pace; the patter is in complete harmony with the graphic theme, echoing the 'tag' graffiti hints in the picture. Equally fine execution of the instrumental parts, which maintain a certain rustic urban vibe, very early 'garage'. The trans-Atlantic vocals fits comfortably into the genre, no unseemly seams here; the production is as slick as the gab. Fine work, all the more so for having been created through cooperation at considerable distance. This Dream Team is on its way to well-deserved success. Bravo.

An explosive, jolly romp of a tune which grabs us immediately by the scruff of the neck and throws us around. An intro worthy of The Who, some clever syncopation in parts, and joyous 'noises off' at others; our toes are kept constantly tapping . A vocal line delivered from the tiled bathroom at the bottom of a well through a megaphone; I'm assuming that the lyrics (were they lyrics..?) are not the key feature needed to decipher the piece..? Modern, bleepy, synths, a rolling gait of a bass line, keen steelworks drums and divers football rattles and rolls delight in giving ground cover to an insistent monochordal keys riff. The outro is just as jovial; there isn't one. Not sure how to link this with the picture, but thanks for the joyride just the same. I don't know where you're going, nor where you're coming from, but the jaunt was fun.

Slow ballad tempo, sparse drums and acoustic bass support a strong vocal line, with suitable backing voices 'off'. The pressure mounts; a chundering guitar riff joins in, and the secondary vocals fill in the background even further. We're released for a spell, returning to the opening falsely-solemn beat, but then they're back with a vengeance, and here to stay, maintaining the tension right up until the very end. Perfect execution, perfect dynamics, perfect vocals for the genre; not much to criticise here (maybe the lead a tad over-treated..?). Seems shorter than its 4 ½ minutes; always a good sign. Absolutely appropriate for the picture; strangely ambivalent that a song be so sonically dark, yet so happy. A keen candidate for top spot, despite the strong opposition. Another good one.

A low heart throb under a 'tappy-tappy' drum beat, a 'chucky chicken' bass line, unchanging from beginning to end, become layered with onward-looking guitar riffs and rhythms, punctuated by less confident sax interjections. We are tempted to move forward, but seem to be held in check; we do not have free rein to go boldly forth and explore. The deliberation intensifies, as differing licks vie for dominance; none succeed completely. There's always the reply of a dubitative phrase preventing complete harmony. We are led out as we came in, with an unwinding of the debate; a final mournful horn leaves the drums to wander off, but are they retreating or advancing..? Dunno, really...

That's it for this month (Phew..!). I hope these snippets bring as much pleasure to you as the listening to all the tracks has to me; yet another splendid crop. Well done, all; back again, I hope, for the next Challenge...

Thank you for taking time to do these reviews Dad :) Indeed what I did was a beginners take on a feeling/state I fall into before staring any of my paintings in the past (oil and canvas mostly). Not while painting but that time when staring at the white empty canvas and waiting for that expressive energy to explode ... but that state can take time and this is what I tried to do here. A meditative state-like where arising and passing away phenomena were observed.

Once again thanks a million Dad!

Well I've only just spotted this thread, but what can I say? Generous, witty, entertaining, insightful and lacking the cynicism that so often permeates and sullies music reviews. A great read and, for someone who has never entered this competion lark before, most encouraging.

Thanks Douglas!
