I can't believe there aren't any in West Yorkshire. Or are they all too bad to warrant recommendation?
What's going on?
I agree, there MUST be someone in W Yorks/Bratford/Leeds/Wakey/Cleckhudderfax/Pontefract/Cas area who can help me with my embarrasing problem??? I bought a semi acoustic bass which has an action like the Humber Bridge, needs fixin before it goes back on evilbay.
I had heard there was a bass luthier in Dean Clough, Halifax, anyone know any more?

There may well be luthiers in that area, but until they get a personal recommendation from an established basschatter whose had work done by them then they don't get on the list :)
Have you personally had work done by this guy - or just heard he was good?

Thanks

Had work done by him. Neck profile, set up and he managed to fix the finish on one my instruments that some tike had decided to put a deep scratch in.

His own basses that he makes are pretty tasty also.

I used to use him as my main tech when he was in Bearwood, Birmingham.

You're right - there's quite a shortage around here. I don't know any one guy who's good at it all (and I used to work in the trade) but I know one chap who's good with general maintenance, electronics and all things custom and another who's excellent at frets/action etc but who charges much less and so doesn't do the thorough cleaning/maintenance stuff that you pay others for.

I'm new to the forum so I will respect the system and not post names and numbers at this point, but if you want the acoustic bass sorting out then feel free to PM and I'll put you in touch with one or both of these chaps.

A few years back there was a guy called Shane who did all of Sound Control's repairs who was excellent but I don't have his number and can't remember his surname to look him up! :)

and another
the guitar workshop (www.theguitarworkshop.co.uk) in Ibstock - 01530 267 324. Leicestershire (near Coalville, but about 13 miles from Leicester - actually 13.8 from my house :)). Just done a very good job on a replacement nut on my Les Paul - quick and good value too.

Hamster,

Another one for the list - Colin Fulton, Glemham, Suffolk IP13 0BE Phone 07913 797193

I've had work done by him - he set up my CIJ Precision and did some fretwork fettling, did an excellent job for a very reasonable price. So much so that when my prized Fylde electric got a major-league ding in the finish, that went his way and he sorted that out too.

Gents,
Jim Fleeting is in Ripon, not so far, he did an excellent bone nut job for me a while ago and will tackle owt including new builds and best of all he's really a bass man who also does guitars rather than vice-versa.
Here's a link www.guitarrepairman.co.uk
Apologies if Jim's already been mentioned and I missed it.

Cheers now,
SR

+1 for Jim

He is a bass man who makes & fettles anything stringed. He's a regular help with me and my family's instruments. Plus he's about to have another study stint in the States which will probably put him on a different orbit in a year or two, so get him now while his affordable!

Just a note that luthier and tech Chris McIntyre, formerly of Cable Street, London E1, has moved to:

Unit 228, Blenheim Court, Blenheim Grove, SE15 (off the charmingly named Bellenden Road).

It's near Peckham Rye station.

See here Multimap

His website is here: McIntyre Guitars

And he did a fantastic job setting up two basses while I waited. I only wish I had the money for one of his custom builds.

Cheers

Mark

Can anyone suggest somebody reliable in Edinburgh?

In the meantime, I've asked Alan from ACG if he would kindly do a bit of tech work for me, nonetheless it would be nice if my 'local' tech wasn't more than an hour and a bit's drive away...

Thanks all.

Pete
The Bass Gallery's URL has changed from the one listed on the first post.

http://www.thebassgallery.com is the correct one.

Is that a good place for getting pickups installed / screening / set up done? how about Dave Wild?
Thanks for that - I've updated the link :)

They can certainly do the work for you - give them a call. They haven't done any work for me, but I've seen their work and it's top notch.

Cheers
