I've recently joined a covers / wedding / function band recently. 50% of the set is probably stuff referred to in this thread, but.... most of it has passed me by until now, so I'm hearing it for the first time and I'm enjoying it for what it is.

Mind you, it's canny weird that most of the bass parts on the newer songs are just four-on-the-floor roots stuff in the U2 style. It gets a bit confusing when you're trying to remember which song you're playing.

As a member of a Dad rock band that I pretty much dont bother getting involved in the set list additions and drops I do notice how well some of the simplest, dull to play stuff goes down.

Wild Thing, and Louie Louie, Mustang Sally, Proud Mary always, go down well.

No punter cares that Louie Louie is a I, IV, V, IV. repeated ad infinitum, but hell do I get bored of it.

And Mr Brightside is actually quite difficult to play on guitar.

Band number 2 I play in do a pared down acoustic version of this- always seems to work well

I find it highly amusing...... Not that I play many pubs but we do try and play around ten pubs per year so that we can invite potential (mostly wedding) clients too.

I always go in with the same blurb that we are not your average pub band (we play predominantly Disco covers) and that always gets raised eyes from the landlords/ladys.

That'll never go down well here mate, they love the rock'..... I always make a bet with them there and then. If we don't entertain your punters as well as the best bands you have in here then we'll play for free. So far (7 years) we've not had to go down that route.

It does amaze me when you see 90% of the bands playing the local circuit that have a similar set.... why is it that bands think they have to do this.... Are they worried to go outside of their comfort zone?

Any way here's our set list -

Good point about landlords who generally know f*ck all about music.

Spectoremg..... ( two comments back) I was wondering when someone would bring that up, you have hit the nail right on the head there. As I mentioned in by initial start up comment, there are thousands of songs out there that are just as familiar as the 100 or so that get used by so many bands. If its true that audiences call the shots on what they want to listen to, how come bands who don't follow this master plan succeed. Soul/ Motown/ Funk/Ska/ Disco..None of these play any of the 'Bible' set songs, and most people in an audience are not big fans of soul or funk or even tribute band that might be on offer, yet these type of bands pull more people, command more money, and play more rewarding stuff for them as players than the standard pub rock acts... I have not spent 30 years, and thousands of pounds to get to a decent standard so I can be told what to play by a pub landlord, a bunch of pi**ed women on a hen party or anyone else who only thinks the band is good after a dozen pints have been guzzled. Go to the Jam house in Birmingham, and see how many of the photocopy set list get played.....Zero...yet 300 people are in ther every weekend night for the sole purpose of watching a good quality band...

An interesting point's being made here about seemingly 'obscure' songs replacing the coma-inducing 'Sex On Fire' etc. A bit of a change doesn't have to mean obscure. There's a thousand songs out there that punters know that just never get played.

I wholeheartedly agree as per my original reply to this post.

They may well know f*ck all about music but generally they know a great deal about making money. Most of them don't care what kind of music you play or even the level of ability of the band collectively or individually. All they are interested in is your potential to draw a crowd. Not getting your head around this concept is likely to be a big disadvantage.

+1
You also can't generally compare pub rock bands with the bands doing soul, funk tribute etc. These bands are usually a higher standard of players commanding higher fees and are playing in venues with a reputation for great music. Bands playing in the local pub have to be cheap and cheerful because for a landlord to justify a spend of £250 he / she needs to shift probably 250 pints more than they would if the band weren't there. On that basis they'd never be able to afford a tribute act or specialist soul band. Places like the jam factory can pull more unique / high standard bands as they have built a reputation as a music venue so will have a good crowd meaning they can pay OK and attract bands wanting the exposure. Any landlord that gets a band like Crez's will have totally lucked out because it's their good fortune that the band choose their venue as a place to bring potential customers down for a look.

Slightly off topic but....

If you play in a band that is not 'mainstream', in as much as it doesn't do familiar covers, then you can always approach venues and offer to gig early in the week for nothing to get your foot in the door. If you get a Tuesday night gig at a recognised venue and garner your support, (friends & family etc), then it vastly increases your chances of getting a gig not only at that venue but other venues on the manor via word of mouth...assuming you do a good gig. Yes there will always be venues/landlords who won't acknowledge the 'loss leader' concept and expect you to also play a Friday night for free or very little but that's just a negotiation. At least they are offering you a gig.

The fact is that if you play in a band that is considered in any way 'inaccessible' by local venues you are going to have to work that much harder.

Crez5150 that's a great set list.

Out of those tracks, are there any that you think would work with a four piece band? Ie guitar, bass and drums? We'd love to do some more disco/funk tracks but always feel that we'd struggle without the keys.

Probably the easiest ones are -

Funky Music
Kiss
Superstition

That was my point though..... I'm not saying they are unusual songs... they are in fact songs that everyone knows but predominatly won't get played in a pub. My point being that there are so many songs that are popular but the pub band crowd seem to only play a narrow selection
No offence, but why do we need to know what key your set lists are played in? The audience certainly wont !
I just copied from my set.... couldn't be arsed to remove every details when posting
Yeah, but disco's hard. Rock, in all its various forms, is easy.
I guess it depends on how competent the muso's in the group are. I wouldn't say it was any harder but I understand what you are saying
Also, not wishing to be a git, Crez, but your set list is kind of the disco classic equivalent of a rock classic set, those songs are the disco songs that everyone knows, just as All Right Now and Sex on Fire are the rock songs everyone knows, itjust so happens that there are sooo many more rock bands than disco bands. Probably because, as quoted above, disco is harder to play, generally. ( I happen to know your band is a bit tasty...!!!!)
Where you have struck gold, IMO is that you can play your classic disco set at pretty much any sort of function and it will go down well, whereas a rock set is more limited to pubs, not too many people want to thrash away to Ace of Spades on their special day, or at the end of year function for a big company!!
Again spot on but as my previous post.... my point being that there are loads of popular songs that people don't play. The songs in my set are all fairly standard tunes that people know.

I play in three bands: a wedding/functions band, an originals band and an unashamedly Heavy Metal pub covers band. The first has a setlist picked from around 150 songs, the bookers get to pick from there, we do stuff from GnR to Johnny Cash to Bruno Mars to funk stuff to the obvious Sex On Fire/Dakota to Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al to Avici to Luther Vandross to a whole Irish subset. The second we pepper the set with covers, as someone mentioned earlier, to keep the punters focused, the third is stuff we want to play (the less obvious stuff like early Rush and Whitesnake and Dio) with the odd Sandman in there.

Guess which one I get the most gigs and get paid the most for? :D

At a wedding recently, a girl came up to me to tell me her boyfriend was a drummer in an originals band and didn't it "compromise my musical integrity" to play covers all night? I didn't actually laugh in her face, but I did smile and shake my head. I told her I enjoy playing songs, however despicably obvious, for a dance floor of pretty girls, and getting pretty well paid for it.

The Irish stuff, in particular, always gets the place absolutely bouncing, full of jigging happy punters, and oh my God they're only three chords (four for the technically challenging ones :D )...

It all depends what you want from a gigging experience, but I wouldn't ever sneer at anyone else's song choice.

The only real yardstick is if it's well played*: a badly played obscure cover or original song (tho it can be harder to tell in this case ;) ) is as toe-curling as a badly played Sex On Fire...

* And that can include whether it's played straight as per record, or whether than band makes it their own...

Ironically the idea when we started the band was to play something different from classic pub rock. This is 1 Hr our list we ended up with
Dakota - Stereophonics Are you Gonna be My Girl Flourescent Adolescent Are you gonna go my way - Lenny Kravitz Learn to fly - Foo Fighters Hard to handle - Black Crowes Creep - Radiohead Cigarettes and Alcohol – Oasis All the small things - Blink 182 Chelsea Dagger – Fratellis Valerie - Zutons/That Skanky Bird Take me out - Kasabian Sex on fire Buddy Holly - Weezer Somebody told me - Killers Bang Bang You're Dead - Dirty Pretty Things Last Nite - strokes

Guess which ones go down well? Now guess which ones we like playing most? There's a few well known songs here that most of my bandmates didn't know when they were suggested. We're working on slotting in a few obscure tunes in a ratio 2:1.

At the end of the day though, when you end up playing an extra 2 choruses of Sex On Fire because the punters are enjoying it so much why would you drop it? I guess this will eventually die a death and become so uncool that no one will play it.

I have done it for you, as the hugeness was verging on unreadable.

Chaps, if you're going to post setlists, can you make sure they are just lists of tunes rather than every single detail, as otherwise it can make them monstrously long and hard to read. Ta. :)
