There seems to be a lot of love for cheap basses on the forums, so lets have a cheap bass thread. Bass must have cost no more than £180 (you don't have to tell us how much it cost)

I'll start with my Squier P bass special. Massive shout out to Grangur for finding it for me :D

Come on, get your cheap ones out.

My cheapie Harley Benton deko. Was about £45 delivered if I recall. Love it to pieces, and more so because it was as cheap as chips.

Wow where do I start ? Best value has to be my 5 string Peavey Foundation,bought last year for £50.
Photo is reversed for some reason :unsure:

[attachment=194805:Peavey 5 (3).jpg]

It was crazy cheap and I felt obliged to send the fella more money when it arrived :)

I spend a lot of time playing the Harley Benton PB-50 though, £60 and strung with Status nylons £15
here's its mocked up with a Retrovibe toaster,it plays and sounds too good so I got another for that mod.

If folk don't mind me posting I've plenty more had for less than the price limit.

I'd love to see a catalog of your collection, photos and all... I aspire to some day have the space for a collection as mighty as yours.

Thanks very much Rob.

I never set out to have so many,just a combination of the great basses out there and my lousy ability at selling.
I'm lucky in that they are all to hand, not stored in cases like collectors pieces, so when anyone visits they just
lift one and play it.

This 91 Peavey Fury is a great playing and sounding bass but by Christ it's been through the wars.

It's light at around 8-8.5 lbs and bits have been replaced like machineheads,knobs and string tree.The scratchplate has a heavy warp
and is scratched to hell as is the body,very heavy attack with a pick.

Puts me in mind of the Hi-Lux on Top Gear,kinda indestructible :) I've seen these go for between £99 to £130 last few years so fit right in with
the price range here.Solid dependable P bass is the only way to describe it and it'll easy see another 20 odd years.

Another Harley Benton Deko! Standard Jazz with new KiOgon wiring loom, Entwistles pups, some Fender knobs and a new black scratchplate. Also re-strung with Ernie Ball slinkies. All for under £125

Two fantastic examples there RickyV

I've the other HB Jazz with the RW and blocks but it's still stock as I like the weird melted plastic look scratchplate :)

Mine had the plain white scratchplate which was just a bit in-your-face for my liking. Loving the black with the sunburst tho.

The Black works very well. The whole thing works very well I imagine :)

When you think the deko JB-20 is nearly the cheapest component of this bass I think it's amazing.

£125 !!!

What kind of looks and comments do you get from others when they hear this or even better get to play it ?

Difficult one to answer really. Certainly the guys in my band noticed the difference when I first started using it over the Yammy. More punch and clarity. Great output from those Entwistle pups. Personally, I dont really have anything to compare it to. I havent played any other jazzes other than a very quick noodle on a Squier VM and if you remember, this bass didnt work at all when I got it due to some dodgy electrics so I never got to play it in its stock set up. I do however think it sounds fantastic. Typical growly jazz sound with both pups up full and tone wide open. Perfect for what I need it for.

The Shine 6 here was cheap in price at £60 inc delivery. I got it just to see how I'd do with 6 strings,then decided I didn't :(
[attachment=197710:Shine 6 (2).jpg]

Hid it in a case for a while but recently dug it out with selling it in mind,turned out my problem was just set up related :D
Neck shim and wee bit juggling with the 2 truss rods and it was good to go.Only I never put it up for sale :lol:
I'll never be proficient on 6's but for £60 it's well worth keeping around.

How does it work posting basses that cost below £180 but would normally cost a lot more ?

Fretless neck and tuners from Roweley Birkin QC, Bachelor of this parish, and a Shine P/J body

Needed a little 'encouragement' to marry the two together, but plays perfectly. £65 all in.

My main fretted bass cost about the same too. No point spending mega bucks of any of my basses, given what I do to 'em live...
