RIP Rutger Gunnarsson

For me, his approach to bass lines is very much like McCartney, a melody in themselves. Every time I listen to Abba, its like being given a lesson in pop perfection, as a group, including the peripheral musicians involved, they have to be in my top 3 songwriters ever.

Absolutely. When I tell people one of my favourite basslines of all time is from Dancing Queen, I get funny looks. But it's a lesson in pop brilliance and is very difficult to play well, though it sounds simple. If anyone reading this is in doubt, go and listen to it properly. RIP.

Or indeed try and learn it. Great bass player. One of my favourites

Very sad news indeed. Along with Bernard Edwards, my favourite bass player - now both are no longer with us. Dancing Queen is an absolute master class, along with One of Us, Money Money Money, and Knowing Me Knowing You. Never get tired of playing along.

You know what that's the best way I've heard them decribed. I've always felt that but without putting it like that.

Really saddened by this.

Like many, it took me years to notice how superb the man's lines were on Abba songs that perhaps I hadn't listened to "musically" before.

I originally had the Abba:Live album on cassette - the bass on that was stunning. However, I bought it on CD recently and the bass seemed to have either been mixed down or was reproduced differently on the digital format.

RIP.

Just a heads up for those wanting some ABBA bass transcriptions, Aidan Hampson has done a superb job of transcribing 12 of the songs.

They're available via his website: http://aidanhampson.co.uk/bass-songbooks/
