dont do it, WD40 will attract dust to your pot like fly`s round a honey pot, use circuit board cleaner.

This - WD40 is remarkable stuff but is a magnet to clag and goit. I use Servisol Super 10.

I use DeOxit, it is fantastic stuff...i read somewhere a top guitar tech was asked "if you were only allowed one bit of kit, what would it be" he replied instantly "DeOxit" it's not cheap but I have had my can for about 5 or 6 years so on a yearly investment about £1.50 a year it's not bad value

crackly pots are most likely due to either dirt on the tracks or the tracks being damaged

wd40 will just loosen/dissolve and dirt stuck on the tracks so may provide a temp fix - if it continues then it most likely will be damaged track on the pot and hence time for replacement

And pull through with oily rag.

Sounds like the fabled military cure for certain afflictions - mere though brings tears to the eyes. A pull through used to be 4" x 2" these days is a less eye watering 45mm x 45mm :)
