If we have any doubt about a warning being issued we discuss it as a team, if there is no doubt then the warning is issued and THEN we discuss it as a team. In some cases this is so cut and dry the conversations are very short. In other cases it can be very long and drawn out. It's a case by case basis :)

I hope that clears things up

I've just found some footage of one such meeting............. :P

Nobody has asked for disclosure of the ins and outs of private conversations. However, if the mods had acted reasonably in banning a member, there would be no need to be so secretive about it. Some people might conclude that they have something to hide.
Well, some people might draw that conclusion and I understand why.

But some of the private discussions that take place between Mods and members contain information that not everyone would like shared openly in public. For example: discussion of how someone's personal circumstances might be swaying their behaviour.

As Mods, we can’t be the judge of what is appropriate to share openly, and what’s not. That's a minefield we don't want to stray into. So we have a simple system whereby all conversations between Mods and members over modding decisions are kept private.

It’s not a conspiracy. It’s just a foolproof system for… er… well, yes ;)

I find I submit shorter posts nowadays as a lot of what I have said has been said by me before and I get bored typing it. To be honest, I only go to the threads I monitor (Performance), Gen. Dis and Off Topic unless something catches my eye. A lot of it is to do with devices and what I can use on my mobile devices as opposed to PCs (eg my mobile and kindle won't play posted videos). The biggest problem I have is I can type quite quickly on a keyboard but these touchscreen devices really slow me down and p*** me off so the points I make are often quite brief now.

I've been here a good few years, despite the meagre amount of posts.
Some people get offended very easily on here. Which is crazy considering, for the most part, this site is just made up of opinions.
Dont agree with them? Thats fine!
I'm aware of how sarcastic i can be, so it's just easier to stay out of it.
That being said, i still find this site extremely useful. I've met some good people on here, who's wisdom has proved invaluable and is much appreciated.
So i'll continue watching from afar, and extracting what bits of information i can.
Now.... back to the shadows

It's a bit annoying when seasoned members criticise someone for posting about something that may have been talked about many times in the past. Short of trawling through every thread to check, how are newer members to know, it's been talked about?

Forums need new blood and if someone wants to ask which strings you prefer, I will partake in that discussion because they are looking for feedback. I'm not going to tell them to go and look at such and such a thread because it's all been done before.

Let's have more understanding that not everyone knows what's been posted before :)

+1 on this too.

Hi icastle....and we'll said. What I was trying to say in a pretty sarcastic way about this ' good posters' thing was 'so what' ......let them go....I don't know who they are, and don't care. I am pretty new to this site, and enjoy a lot of what is on here. I have asked for advice, and help....and got it, without checking to see who was giving it to me. I was just glad of it when I needed it. What has become apparent in this thread is there is some sort of a pecking order with 'newbies' at the bottom of the heap, and the ' good posters' at the top. What a load of claptrap. We are all contributors, all have opinions, and all should be seen as equal within this forum.... The very fact that the thread is titled 'Where have all the good posters gone' (whoever they may be) makes me feel a bit second best. Who is to say I am not a good poster, or someone finds my stuff interesting. If Basschat disappeared in a puff of smoke, my life would not collapse...it's just a bunch of bass players talking bass type things and having a bit of fun. Leave it like that and enjoy it.
Well, since I started the thread I did indeed make a point asking what is good..??
If you asked me, I'd say good is not down to the number of posts rather than the
content. So, someone making 10 posts a day could be more 'trival' than
1 single pertinent point and has more benefit that a few status update, for example.

So, if there were such a ranking system maybe that criteria would be be relevant.

I prefer posters, myself who can 'chat and debate' about issues/threads in OT.. but as
long as it is an issue rather than a chat show. Others posters may be all about socialising.

If someone had only 10 posts and all of them in 'Amps and Cabs' talking about a technical
point, that is useful, IMO... and far better value, IMO, than 100 chats elsewhere, for me,
But, that is just my feeling.

If you want to be a good contributor..again, depending how you rate that, then contribute
and get involved. As noted, the most visible and, IMO, regarded, new member is Blue.
It stands to reason, that a good contributor will have a few posts to their name. again, IMV.

And the reason, I 'miss' a few is because they had substantial input, and were highly visible,
and made good points..some of which I agreed with, but some I didn't but the latter didn't make
them useless at all. For myself, I can quite easily move on and not hold a grudge
over a point if the point was made reasonably.

My question wasn't really over what makes a poster good, I just wondered why they left
and of course, people come and go all the time, but this was almost a cull. Now, I don't suggest
they got banned at all...but something overnight, almost, made them leave and I noticed.
That is all..no real agenda over this.

I hope a few free up some time and come back, but I know quite a few will not...

To my knowledge, I live with 30mins of WPD and we probably know and play the same places but I've never met him
or been remotely likely to. Don't really know why that is..maybe our musical tastes are world's apart..??
So, no that is not my reason for posting the thread.

It was me who posted "relax people".

As far as I can see - and not only on this thread - there are a lot of people on this forum getting worked up about stuff that generally isn't all that important at the end of the day.

Everyone has opinions, not always ones that will agree with everyone else, but some people seem too quick to jump on the offended bus at the first opportunity.

Really is one of the reasons why I generally don't post on here as often as I would otherwise as I can't be ar$ed with the potential fall out from someone taking umbrage to my posts.
Ah. Ok.

To be honest, I think when I first came here I was a lot less selective which posts I read. I used to read nearly every new post.

I'm a lot more selective now and can usually gauge which threads could be contentious and don't bother reading them. Unless something reaches 2 or 3 pages and that contradicts what I thought of it through reading the title, then I might have a read. Otherwise I just read posts that look interesting. There's enough of us here to keep the forum lively without us all answering the ohms question.

So that's why you've never been seen at the same time.

In truth, the thing I've learned most from this thread today is that you'll probably break through 10,000 posts before it gets dark.

At that point, you finally discover the truth about the Inner Sanctum on Basschat.

I'm not allowed to talk about it, but I'll just say watch those ceremonial robes; they tend to ride up a bit during long prayer meetings. :)

Mods, thanks for that. I think this response is the right thing to have posted and, while I would prefer you to have gone further, I recognise that's just one opinion amongst many.

NOT specifically in connection with WPD but more as a general point, I'm not convinced that you can actually say "Our policy (rightly) means ...". That, too, is no more than an opinion. I think that there really are cases where no such discussion should be allowed, but conversely there are cases where refusal to embrace Glasnost actually does more harm than would be done by standing by your principles.

On that note, I have no brief to speak for anyone bar myself but some of those who have gone were also doing no more than standing by their principles, i.e. loyalty to a long-standing friend.

Just saying ...

:)

Ok..as far as I know that is a relatively recent event with the solidarity issue.
That might explain Nigel and Pete... and one or two others.

But again, I don't know these guys off site so my post was a general point.
We're not being secretive. We have a rule that moderating decisions are only discussed with the member in question and the moderating team. This rule is for everybody and exceptions are not made. Many decisions are fairly hum-drum and most members would either not be bothered or welcome them. For example the banning of people trying to con members in the market place, We're often under attack from scammers and certain members of the mod team spend an awful lot of time and effort getting to the bottom of things while trying to maintain the marketplace as a safe and impartial environment, but that kind of stuff is not sexy and has not got the same attention the banning of WPD has.

There is quite a rigid (IMHO) structure of warnings and no member would be banned without them either knowing why or having a long history leading up to the ban. While you may think the mods are being secretive, I'd say the banning of any member is only the business of the mods and the member, so maybe members are just being nosey?

WPD is free to post whatever he likes on social media elsewhere, but again you are only getting one side of the story and then from his perspective. Who is to say whether he is telling the whole truth?

To any member who is not happy with the direction of the forum (especially the ones in self imposed exile) I'd say get involved. It's the members who make the place and either you can sit around moaning about it or you could lead from the front and be one of the 'good' posters that we appear to be in need of.

I didn't know Wayne, or really have anything to do with him. He seems to be very popular with people I do know so I'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt... but to be honest from what I saw of his posting on BC most of it seemed flippant, rude and aggressive... with a slight air of self importance. I suspect there is more to the banning than meets the eye...

Can we please be careful about what we say?

Lets bear in mind that Wayne and his friends may be reading this and though I stand by the decision made I have no ill feelings towards him

Ditto.

The world has since kept turning, so it's perhaps time to move along :)

It's an interesting point made about alternative social media and if it becomes the standard practice in future for like minded folks with common interests to use stuff like facebook groups then ultimately the days of internet fora will be numbered. I think we're a way off that yet though.

As much as i like a bit of Off Topic, there are people on this thread innocently saying how people get angry for no reason at all. Some of these are the one who put up antagonistc posts in the first place.I have taken the bait on one or two occassions.
As for the best posters, personally i believe they are the ones on the technical advice, and helping people out with issues they have. I am a beginner, so i rarely post in technical, only questions. Some maybe a bit tiresome for some, but i always get help, and i have also got quite a bit of help via PM, which i am grateful. I am getting better at playing, and theory, so perhaps i will be able to be a better poster in the help front in the ffuture.
I really only joined for the technical aspects, and too make me a better player. So far, this site is fullfilling that goal for me. The other topics are just a bonus. Another bonus is actually meeting some of you at shows. I will try to get to more of these in the future.
