What do you use to tighten your machine heads?

Recommended Posts

I was changing strings on a 2013 jazz bass recently, and the bottom part of the machine head literally dropped out. These are easy to put back, but not having a specific spanner or tool for the job. could only tighten them 'finger tight'. This might be enough, as there don't seem to be any problems, and I understand that over-tightening could be detrimental, but wondered what everyone else used to tighten them?
For reference, the machine heads aren't screwed into the headstock, and it's the nut on the top (as opposed to the cog on the rear) that I'm concerned about. Hope that makes sense!
Cheers

I thought Et's answer was perfectly helpful, especially given the lack of meaningful info in the request.

To answer the OP in another way - "No that doesn't make sense" - a picture would help & as always - is worth a thousand words.

Yeah, like wot ET said, if its the hexagonal nut on the face of the headstock, then use a regular open ended spanner. If it's the toothed cog on the rear that's come loose, then just snug this up with a flat blade screwdriver.
