My current MM Line up. The Pre EB is 40 years older than the Special (1979 - 2019).

That special looks particularly sweet. Something about the roasted maple / ash combo. How would you compare it to the HH Sterling? That's a bass you don't see too often.

@Duarte I uploaded pictures of the Special a few pages before : Stingray Special pictures

The Sterling HH and the Special HH are two different basses.

The Special is lighter but the Sterling's neck is slimmer.

The pickups are wired in series on the Sterling, only the 3rd position is wired the same... but the pickups are different.
The Sterling has naturally more mids and growl. The Special is scooped in comparison but you can easily dial more mids and get a killer sound as well.

Getting the traditionnal Stingray sound out of the Sterling requires to adjust the EQ.

So I’ve just put some la Bella 760fs on the Old Smoothie and it’s thumping away on the low register but surprisingly still sounds like a stingray on the high strings and still slaps like one too!
 What a cracking bass.

Also despite the warning on the packet not to use these strings for through body, I spoke to Will (low end lobster) who’s had these on his smoothie for 12 months with no problem.
well chuffed

They sound great with fists. I’ve had Thonastik, GHS, and EB Group iii and iv on mine, all sounded good but the Group iv have stayed on for ages now. Such a killer bass.

I was a little dubious putting the 45-105 760fs on I have Fl’s on my p bass 43-104, doesn’t sound like much of a difference but you can feel it in the fingers for sure.
But they sound great, can’t wait until they break in.

Absolutely, I have TI’s on my P Bass too, the tension is so low that the gauge is deceptive. Your Smoothie will be a low end beast when they break in 💪

And now back to the porn….

Loving the East preamp on my ‘95 Ray, which was a 2 band. With the middle at centre, the middle gets taken out the circuit so it’s like a 2 band in terms of the depth compared to a 3 band. The high boost switch is very handy too.

After awhile with it I can’t praise the ‘old smoothie’ enough, the best stingray I’ve played with the best tone.
Currently strung with labella LTF’s it growls, it thumps, but it still slaps with the signature stingray sound.
Very impressive.

Having now had the 'Ray SS for a good while, I'm really starting to get the 'Ray bug again. It doesn't help when this appears on the GG website as incoming 😍...

Fortunately, I've seen the weight for these published and they're way too heavy for my ailing shoulders. But just look at it!

You could always take the Marcus Geard route.... suddenly weight isn't an issue! (translation: buy it)

Funnily enough, I’ve tried playing my Rob Allen in the upright position and I find it very comfortable. Sadly, this does nothing but increase my GAS for a double bass (along with a ‘Ray).

Yes it has a great clean tone as well I’m not really into the heavily distorted sound. But with the blend knob you can blend the clean and the dirty signal to what suits your taste.

So you'll be leaving the overdrive pedal at home then?

The ‘Rays I have owned over the years…

1. USA SUB, 2. ‘Ray 5 in trans teal (should never have sold that), 3. Egyptian Smoke 3 band, 4. Sterling ’Ray SS (current squeeze) & 5. early run Sterling’Ray35. My favourites of the above have been the ones that will run in serial (1, 2 & 4).

It was very nice. I sold it back to the guy I bought it off. The colour was great, green or blue depending on the light. The only bass I regret selling.

Just picked up a USA sterling, been after one for a lot of years, just never got round to it, couldn’t resist this one to go with my 2 band stingray.
Like it just as it is but a set up to suit me will only improve it more.
Ernie ball do make some great basses 😄
