My starry night and charcoal sparkle together. There’s not a massive difference in colour from certain angles IMO.

Which one would you choose and why if you were forced to keep only one of them?

Posting this mod I did on my EBMM short scale in case anyone is interested.

- swapped out the neodymium pickup for an Aguilar AG4M (which I modded to coil split). The new MM neodymium pickups are excellent, but I just can’t get on with them and had the same issue on the Ray Special I owned for a few years. I have an AG4M in my ‘95 Ray so it’s nice to keep them in sync.

- added a 3 way switch to keep the series/parallel/single option.

- changed the pots to 250k and added a push/pull volume, to send the pickup straight to the output jack. This is because I turned an old EBMM 2 band preamp into a pedal and wanted to bypass the pots in the bass. There’s a photo of my first attempt of the pedal, think I’ll smarten it up in the summer with a better box too.

Really love this little bass, and I’m glad the tone is now more in keeping with what I like. It’s got TI’s on it, and really compliments my ‘95 Ray and Old Smoothie. Wish they made these 25 years ago!

Sadly there’s a good chance I may need to sell this bass due to a change in my personal circumstances, I’m gutted to have to let a bass go, but this one was the ‘last one in’ and my others are more sentimental.

Thought I’d put the word out here before doing an advert (I’m a supporting member so I hope that’s ok). Just PM please if interested.  EDIT - advert now up in classifieds.

Don't think I've put mine on here yet. Here's my 2006 Stingray 5HHin Honeyburst. This is an early run,so the back pickup is wired in series nor parallel. It still got that unmistakable ray bounce and growl but its a smoother/darker sound nd with the other pickup ive found it a really useful tone.

They changed it to parallel wiring in 2008 I think when they released the Sterling 5HH which see the series settings.

It had a Dark Tortoise Guard on it,but I've recently has a Dark red one made as I feel it complements the finish bètter.

This begs the question - what happened to the old neo pickup?

Absolutely beautiful bass by the way.

New arrival to the flock and with that I think I’m done… (maybe)

Old Smoothie has finished my stable of where I’m wanting to be.
63 P with flats, cutlass with rounds, old smoothie with flats and a 93 stingray with rounds.
That should cover everything I want.
Oh wait!! Fretless doh!!!

My current MM Line up. The Pre EB is 40 years older than the Special

I was looking at getting a pre ernie ball myself but the old smoothie did it for me instead it has all the old features including the 2 band epoxied eq but with a few modern twists, truss wheel, 6 bolt neck etc.

I’ll still keep looking though 😂🤣

They are a great sounding bass hopefully I’ll get the right strings sent (they sent me medium scale instead of long scale) and I can set it up how I like it this weekend 😄

I narrowly missed out on buying the first edition stingray with radio knobs a few years ago. One thing I like about rays are how consistent they are - apart from the feel, the sound is unmistakeable and never wildly different from bass to bass/year to year IME.

+1 - the depth and breath in each note still astounds me on mine. Quite like that passive vibe, but still with the active clarity and punch.

If you like passive with punch then check out the cutlass, I’ve got flats on mine atm and it does the Motown thump,  but with rounds (changing this week for DR fat beams) it rocks!
