After a lot of hours I spent deciding whether to buy an old one from the seventies or a new Special I finally decided, taking into account my experience with vintage old Fenders and new Custom Shops.

I took a new Special and I don’t think I made a mistake. It has everything. Sound, feel and appearance. Craftsmanship is at the level of Fender Custom shop or Sandberg. There are no flaws that have accompanied previous Stingray models and that have separated me from so many pieces I owned.

I am especially happy because I managed to find the color that I like the most and is no longer on offer - Aqua Sparkle :).

I can see you with one o these Mr T 🙂

I’ve never had one Dov, but I’m seriously considering adding one to the collection, I really liked the grey sparkle one with the 2 pickups , that one above is stunning 🤩

Anyone else using flats on their Ray?

I recently strung mine with Cobalt's & I'm really enjoying it!

I have EB Group on my Smoothie, and EB Cobalt on my 2 band Ray, both 40-95 as I prefer the tone and feel of that gauge on Rays. Both strings are excellent, I probably just favour Groups as they are a more middle ground flat - not too modern, not too old school.

I have Thomastik on my P & J basses, but for me those strings didn’t suit me on any Ray.

Also a cobalt flats user on my stingray. They could have been made for the bass. They give the right amount of chunky bottom, plasticky string ‘sound’ and snap when popped.

@Deedee inspired by your single ply matte black pg I have ordered one for my SR4HH. Mines an older bass, 06, in sapphire black, it’s got a snake skin looking thing on it at the moment that I’ve been assured is original but not my thing. I’ll put some before after photos up when it arrives but if it looks anything like what it looks like in my head then I’m impressed already

Nice one, I look forward to seeing the photos. I’ve always been amazed at how erm, ‘far out’ some of the stock EBMM plates were. Understated is the way to go as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve got a couple of interesting pick guards on other stingrays but this bass matte black will look great. And i just really don’t like this one that’s on it
