MUSICMAN PORN THREAD

budget bassist

Recommended Posts

Well, phase one of the transformation is complete, turning my ugly duckling Sub Sterling USA into a swan. The black lacquer on the neck had started to degrade, peeling and very sticky. Treatment with scotch rite pads etc only lasted a couple of gigs before the stickiness came back so something more drastic was in order. The back of the neck has been stripped back to bare wood and a vintage gloss tint applied. It was good to see a nice piec of maple under there. The back of the headstock has also been stripped, the serial sticker was carefully reapplied and all glossed over. The front of the headstock was left black, I'm not trying to pretend this bass is anything other than a sub, but the black was sprayed over with gloss.

Phase two will commence next year, something to replace the 'artex' on the body to complete the transformation to swan.

Replaced the pickguard om my StingRay 5 with something a bit more modest that only covers the control cavity, it's a crime to hide such a nice piece of wood underneath a big white plastic sheet!

Detail.

Colored the unused screw-holes with a orange sharpie.

Well, here's my new baby! 2010 Ernie Ball 2band Stingray. Bought off of this forums very own SiFi!

I'm upgrading the pre amp in it to an East 3 band 3 knob and eventually I want to get a Hipshot de tuner for it. A friend gave me the chrome plated brass pick guard for it which I absolutely love and I've done the series/parallel switch mod to the pick up. Scary process but I love it. Easily my favourite bass at the moment. Strung with 125-60 Rotosound Swing Bass and tuned B E A D as I prefer having a low B over a high G.

Hopefully you all like her, especially StingrayPete1977 and McNash who were very helpful with some questions I had regarding Stingrays.

The shape of that plate works really well, looks like factory option, well done. Always nice to see a white pickup cover Ray too.

Well played. I've never been a fan of big plastic pickguards at all.

If it's not too bleak outside tomorrow I will get the Sledge out and take a few photo's.

Once the latest acquisition arrives I was planning to do a hardcore centrefold spread featuring all of them :D

Mmm, that will be quite a centrefold... I am looking forward to it already 😉

Couple of pics of my '90 Trans Teal Stingray. I bought it new in June 1990 from Carlsbro Music in Norwich and it's been my #1 gigging bass ever since. Frets could do with a redress, but otherwise consistently awesome. It's a bit greener in real life.

Nice Musicman collection Hiram! I need to do the same and label mine up.

That Sledge is lovely.

Which Starry Night bass did you go for? Looks like it's been a VERY popular finish package for EBMM.

I almost bought another 6 string Musicman guitar but the prices have gone crazy now...the one I was offered was also a customer return....always makes me think twice and not bother.

I've also made this one (that's on the bass moment). Still not sure which one I prefer.
Personally I prefer the first orange one, looks like it fits better. To my eye this draws attention that the rest of the pickguard is technically "missing" but that could just because we are used to seeing white pearloid pickguards on a Ray5

Don't get me wrong, both look great!

I ordered a Stingray 4HS with MHS and an SLO neck.

You're right about the prices. I was going to order a Stingray 5 30th, but they are asking a lot of coin for it. I still might, but I have a month to think about it before the ordering window opens. What were you going to order?
That will be a lovely rare bass! You don't see many 4HS and 5HS basses, and it surprises me as the wiring options are great for that setup. Plus I haven't seen many Starry Night basses...more guitars.

The Stingray 5 30th is really tempting. Great spec and interesting that they are using binding.

I was very tempted with a Valentine or St Vincent, but the prices went up by approx. £300.

Here's my MM collection:

First my 20th Anniversary SR5:

I'm not the greatest fan of the SR5 asymmetric scratch plate so this, together with the other modifications, really does it for me.

Saying that she is up for trades as it's too similar to the Bongo below.
