Is it just me, its just that I find JD's a bit 2 dimensional in appearance, other basses seem to have a depth to them, and in some respects JD's are just sort of flat, dont get me wrong they sound fine....ramble over shoot me down.

I agree and to me, thats part of their aesthetic beauty! The very early ones did not have the more pronounced `body edge' contours and they appear even slimmer in depth! Given the wider bodies, the slim depth aids weight reduction!

Hi Kev, that's a beauty. I really, really like the finish and especially the inlays, they make the bass a touch diffferent.
What's the weight like and is the neck ok?

Well done for getting such a lovely bass.

Now all I need is my old one back and then I've got all the basses I'll ever need.
Here's a nice little number that I picked up from a really nice guy in Scotland yesterday.

This isn't my photo, I hope Alex doesn't mind me putting it on up here.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I can play it properly through an amp.

It was built for a guy called Thom Boyle, and was originally pearl pink before being changed to white. I'm going to have John Diggins refinish it, possibly keeping it white and I fancy a change of the neck inlays. I spoke to John a couple of weeks ago and he quoted me a great price for doing this.

Anyone know how to date them from the serial numbers ?

Here's a nice clip of Mark King with his 'Star child' bass.

Hehe! He's had my Series I for just over a year...went in for a total respray! Bless him! He's one of the best. Mine should be ready very soon - can't wait!

I'd personally go for the planet inlays - they really set the basses off nicely - your bass is a Series III body shape. The serial numbers usually follow a numeric format for example:

05596 would indicate 1985. Thom probably had it built in the late 80's /early 1990s - the teardrop string anchors first appeared on the Calibas bass which first appeared around '88.

Nice one!

I first saw them at the Royal Court, Liverpool in 1983, they where totally and utterly amazing, Phil Gould is one of the best drummers in the world.
I think he taught Kingy so much and it's great to see that he's performing again. :)

I thought I'd treat you to these pics of me with my JD Mark King. These pics are now just over 20 years old. I got into Bass and not long after a workmate of mine showed me a video of the BBC Sight and Sound in Concert featuring Level 42 that had been on telly the previous weekend, blown away or wot !.
They had just brought out Micro Kid, and about 2 weeks later they played Nottingham so I went along to the gig, blown away even more ! They were awesome. I went to see them at the NEC when they had all the hits, but it wasn't the same. The sound was that bad at the NEC I never went back again, even to this day !

Anyway the band in the photo's was called Danceschool, in the last spot the lads dressed up as schoolboys and the 2 girls did the full St Trinians schoolgirl stuff complete with gadders, if you get what I mean :) . The punters loved it.

Anyway's enjoy the pics

Great stuff John!

To me, as a young fledgling bassist in the '80s, those pics sum up the era perfectly! I started playing in '82 (I was only 11 then! hard to believe I know!) and I can kind of remember seeing the video to `Living It Up' on TOTP - I thought that Mike Lindup was the lead singer of the band and that Mark looked like some kind of hardcase! I then saw the band on telly again and Mark was playing one of his Jaydees - I thought it was some kind of Yamaha bass as the body shape and inlays were reminiscent of a BB range bass - I didn't really know anything about Jaydees then!!!

I bought my first Mark King model from Musical Exchanges in '88 - it was a blue burst Series III model. Again, at that time, I thought all JDs had a similar sized body as my bass looked quite small on me, whereas Mark's (series I) looked massive on him - I assumed he was some kind of pygmy!!!! I had that bass for around a year, then swapped it for a red Series II (like Johns!) and have over the years owned many many JDs, including Mark's red Series I (serial number 00002) which is most famous for its appearance on the Live at Wembley video/dvd.

I went over to see John Diggins on Monday - they are really busy and have many new builds on the go - I dropped off my Roadie fretless for a complete refurb. John is still very touched by all the interest in what he is doing and has recently been featured in the new Haynes manuals for both the Fender Strat and Gibson Les Paul.
My 1st gig was the original line up on Sunday 11th November 1984 at Birmingham Odeon, I was 12 and totally blown away by what I saw.
Yes, saw your JD at Johns - lot of potential there! John is the best - lovely guy and very humble about his art.

First time I saw 42 live was at the NEC in '88 - sadly never saw the original line up.
