Great record. I bought this the day it was released in Summer 1982. It was an important record as far as hip-hop goes because it was a hit and was one of the records that brought hip-hop to the masses. It was also a time of political unrest and uncertainty and a time of protest the likes of which we don't see any more and it fitted in perfectly with the mood of those times.

80s Hip-Hop has aged terribly IMO, I think there is better stuff around today.

I have no idea what age you were at the time (1982) but it's probably as much about social comment of the time as it was about the music.

That's why it's aged, it's not really relevant any more I'm sure it was great at the time but issues move on and new artists take up the baton.

[/quote]so what is better then.?. Hip hop is not all about social commentary. Some people actually like the sounds. If you listen to white lines, it's as relevant today as it ever was. You must have missed that maybe

I'd be interested to know how old you were when The Message was released.

I agree, but this stuff does nothing for me and to be honest I prefer British Hip-hop, something like this for a start.

I only own two Hip Hop records, this and White Lines! I never came across any others after that that worked for me, the more the genre turned to Rap, being gangster and popping a cap in someone's ass the less it appealed

You're obvious not a fan but that's no problem but there was a lot of great stuff around from 1979-1984 for anyone who was interested in it.

Back to the OP - had a weird turn of fate the other week. Fairly well oiled in a tiny pub in Ramsgate, people dancing away to an extended version of The Message. Got talking to the DJ and turned out it was Skip McDonald ! He lives in the area and hosts a night there once a month. Naturally we then had a drunk (well I was drunk) conversation about Doug Wimbish.

Pub is Queen Charlotte, Ramsgate. Any BC'ers ever in the area PM me and I'll join you for a pint. :)

Not sure what the point of that is as far as the op is concerned but it did amuse me because if you were a fan of British Hip-Hop in the 80s this is what was on offer. :D

If we're also talking about new stuff - Michael Christmas is worth checking.

He deserves to break though this year. His last album is free (!) >>

My old mate Jeff is largely responsible for the rise of quality funky nights in Ramsgate. He moved there some years ago after much DJing in London and created a scene!!

Total classic!

Used to go and 'turn out' kids from a different school with my 'crew' to this as a young breakdancer in the early '80s.

Happy days! :)

(No wonder me backs foooked now)
