Cash converters have started to get wise to the value of kit over the last year or so. I have had some fantastic bargains in the past because they just didn't know what they were selling.
Squier precision fretless £30. Gale GS 401 vintage Hi Fi speakers £20. GK backline head £50. it goes on. All from local store when I just pop in to see what's there.

ah Gale speakers. I used to lust after those:)

most of my stepsons fishing gear that was nicked was found in Cash Convertors. The store had the video of the scum that stole it, they knew who he was, but the police waited months to confront him. Because they never found any other of his stuff he had nicked in his house, and as the stepson never had photos of the kit, or marked, they were free to sell it. The biggest legalised fences in the country. I would never buy from them.

I've done OK at a Cash Generator that I swing by most Saturdays when kids are at dance classes.

More often that not, if I like the look of something, I leave a minimum deposit, then pay it up over a few weeks. Barely feel it that way...

Most recent acquisition... Peavey Millenium BXP5 £70

Session Pro LP Copy £40... Ply body, but it looked the part with a really nice maple veneer and played great after a quick setup. Moved it on via eBay for a ill' profit.

Vester Tradition Series '57 S Type. I paid too much; £120.00, but this one was phenomenal. Again, moved on for a bit of a profit...

Can't find a pic of the Ibanez RGR321 that I got for £80 cos it 'wasn't working'... Previous owner had attempted to fit a SD Blackout (in the dark, while wearing boxing gloves apparently). A pair of humbuckers from an old CSL LP copy were quickly dropped in, the Blackout went on eBay, quickly followed by the guitar and I had doubled my money in a couple weeks..!

Never mind, here she is

It's very much the luck of the draw when it comes to visiting these places, and being a regular who knows his stuff helps.

Kids classes start back in a couple weeks, and I'm looking forward to paying a long overdue visit. I'll keep you posted...

BC Rich Ironbird bass from the Plumstead branch. Advertised at £99 but there was a worrying bow in the neck - when I questioned the returns policy the chap leaned over and offered it to me for £40! Turns out it had just been tuned comically high, once re-tuned the neck settled nicely. :)

Sadly my local branch in Dartford always seems to sell their instruments for reasonable prices, which is really no fun at all.

And I've been gigging said bass for some time now. Sounds awesome!

About 5 years ago I had a 70s Satellite Jazz copy for £25 - it was up for £50 but one of the pups was dead & the guy wanted it out of the shop. Re-soldered the pup cable to the pot, cleaned it up and gyppo-flipped it for £100. Easy. :)

A few years back the Newcastle branch had a very tidy Ibanez SR506 6-er up for £120, but I was too skint to take advantage. More recently my local one had a Yamaha SBV500 (exactly like the one I have, apart from the grime) for £60. I had no cash or card on me at the time - should've asked them to stick it out the back for me, because it was gone a few hours later!

To be honest though, from what I've read of your BC posts, if anyone could find a bargain it would be you. I very much doubt Mr Cash Converters has your astonishing depth of knowledge on Japanese bass guitars...

Just before Christmas about 10 years back I saw a virtually new Vigier Surfretter fretless guitar including case, gold coloured hardware( no not bass) not a single mark on it in a local CC shop up for sale about £700 I offered them £400 which they refused. They insisted they would sell it on line. I told them why it was such a specialist instrument and that they would never sell it for such a high price but they were sure they would sell it. I went back in the new year and it was still on sale I offered them £300 and we settled on £350. Bingo. At the time they could be seen in guitar magazines for £1300.

Ahh, you came to our Vigier stand at the Great British Guitar Show. I was thinking of your story when I saw this thread! What a find!

In fairness, I don't go into Crack Converters too often, only when I happen to pass one! I think you get lucky with the more uncommon stuff (like the SBV, for example) where a quick scan of Ebay is highly unlikely to turn up a bunch of sold examples, so Mr CrackCon pretty much has to guess a value.

'06 Warwick Streamer $$ a few months back, non-functioning active circuit but works just fine passively, reduced from £500 to £400 :)

I did an obligatory scout of the serial number beforehand and the guy said it was a pawn that was never reclaimed so seemed to be a legit acquisition

I did very well out of cash generator in Gloucester. I picked up a CMI naughtynaughty-copy-of-a-famous-company-bass for £90 (I think). They didn't know what it was or how rare it was. Needed a very small rewire due to a touch of hum. Still has the pickup cover on it and everything, played like a dream.

Sadly I had to move it on as i bought it to sell it just before i moved to uni. Sold it to Cosmo on here, I believe! Still miss it and I only had it for about a month!

I remember seeing a Wal for £200 back in the mid-90s. I'd have had it if I'd had £200 at the time!

Oh Jeez........that one really hurts........ :(

I've had a few bargs -
- '60's or early '70's Guild Starfire bass hard case in excellent nick for £20 - see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1969-GUILD-USA-STARFIRE-BASS-CASE-fits-also-GIBSON-EB-2-SEMI-BASS-/121410296735?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c449e1b9f
- Mint Peavey Classic 30 guitar combo (all-valve / US-made) for £90
- Squier MB1 bass in decent nick for £50
- early '60's Broadway semi-acoustic guitar with twin Fenton Weil pickups for £30 (punk-era graffiti all over it, but came up lovely with a nitro re-fin and a Bigbsy fitted)

Fences R Us. I see the same people taking stuff into our local one (just round the corner so I pass it most days) on a regular basis and the staff never seem to query why the same bloke is taking in yet another mobile phone, laptop or guitar when he took one in the week before and the week before that etc etc.

I never use them at all, although I have an occasional glance in the window. They are trading on peoples poverty and I don't like to be part of that at all. As has been also stated they are good at being Fences R Us to boot. Just my opinion on them.
